PBS recently aired an episode of NOVA recently the showed the history of horse domestication and the various ways in which this changed the course of human history. Besides being interesting, the show showed glimpses of lab work during the analysis of ancient horse and human DNA.
In another shot an evolutionary biologist uses some basic rotators and a Thermo Sorvall microcentrifuge while explaining some of the difficulties in extracting DNA from ancient tooth and bone samples. A few moments later he loads samples into a Thermo Sorvall X1R centrifuge with a swinging bucket rotor. In another lab we spotted a Biorad Tetrad 2 thermal cycler.
If you have a chance, check out the episode online at PBS.org. And as always, if you’re looking for any lab equipment please give us a call. Thanks!

We’ve worked with a number of MVE Series cryopreservation tanks over the past few years and thus far we are fans. These units are durable, relatively easy to use, and can provide storage for either vapor or liquid phase. In addition to that, the stainless-steel exteriors are easy to keep clean and more resistant to dings and scratches that most powder-coat painted models like the Thermo Locator series.
The MVE XLC 511 can hold up to 10,400 vials (2mL) in a total of 11 racks, or up to 224 blood bags. It can hold either square or pie racks and the large neck opening makes accessing the chamber for loading or removal a cinch. You can find or load your samples quickly, meaning less nitrogen evaporation, less sample exposure, and quick temperature recovery.
Another feature we like is the large lid handle: unlike some other cryotanks with recessed lid handles or plastic lids, the fixed metal handle on the MVE XLC 511 is sturdy and easy to grip even when wearing heavy protective cyrogenic gloves.
Our technicians test all equipment to confirm that it operates properly and to the manufacturer’s specifications. So if you’re looking for a used and refurbished cryogenic storage tank, please call or email us today about the MVE XLC 511. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished Baker fume hoods from American Instrument Exchange.
The Baker Company is known for their top-of-the-line biosafety cabinets and laminar flow clean benches, including the Baker SterilGARD SG403 and SG603 series BSCs, the SterilGARD SG404 and SG604 series BSCs, and the Baker Edgegard EG6252 clean benches. But did you know that Baker also makes terrific chemical fume hoods?
Baker Chemgard-RI
Take the Baker Chemgard-RI, for example. These 6’ wide chemical fume hoods are designed for use in radioisotope applications as well as more general applications to protect personnel from toxic and/or volatile chemicals by continuously delivering airflow away from the user to the work area. These models have a combo sash – glass panels that slide horizontally with a frame that allows all the panels to be raised vertically. Combo sashes improve both operator safety and energy savings. The formed radii, precision-engineered, 16-gauge, Type 304 stainless steel, coved corners, water-tight welded and polished seams and a coved corner stainless steel work surface, 3⁄4″ deep, continuously welded to interior, allow for radioisotope applications and can be reinforced with lead shielding, or left as an easy-to-clean stainless steel worksurface for general chem applications. In short, the Chemigard-RI hoods are a great option for many labs.
Then there are the Baker Chemgard FH.6 models. These fume hoods also have stainless steel exteriors and interiors along with dual horizontal and vertical sashes. The energy-efficient design of these models reduces backdraft and turbulence as well as minimizes roll effect in airflow, which in turn minimizes concentration of vapors behind the view screen and sash.
So in addition to the more common Mott and Kewaunee fume hoods, please consider a hood from Baker. You can call or email us anytime for more details, including pricing and availability. Thanks!

As we’ve mentioned before on this blog (more than once) purchasing used lab equipment is a great way for new labs to save money and extend their runway.
Lab equipment represents a huge percentage of any lab’s startup budget, so the possibility of saving up to 60% of the cost on equipment always sounds like a great investment. But how can you be sure that you’re purchasing used equipment that’s going to work properly, be delivered by professionals, and arrive clean and with minimal wear and tear? In other words, how can you be assured that the used equipment you purchase is going to give you the best return on investment?
Resellers with decades of experience like American Instrument Exchange can provide high quality used and refurbished lab equipment that is tested, cleaned, and cost-effective. There are many dealers who enter the market just looking for a quick buck and without having deep and detailed knowledge about the equipment they are selling. Be sure to find out how equipment is tested and make sure that the company is reputable.
As one of the first used and refurbished lab equipment dealers in the US, American Instrument Exchange has been providing companies nationwide with high quality equipment since 1969. Based just north of the heart of the Boston/Cambridge biotech cluster and with over 50 years of experience, American Instrument sells biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, incubators, centrifuges, ovens, balances, freeze dryers, refrigerators, freezers, rotary evaporators, lab furniture and more to hundreds of companies and academic labs.
If you have any questions about used lab equipment or are starting a new lab and need want to find a way to reduce your initial equipment costs without sacrificing quality or support, please call or email us today. Thanks!

Used and refurbished MP FastPrep 24 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.
We like to think of the MP FastPrep homogenizer as a robust update of the Savant FastPrep FP120. Both models are designed for efficient disruption of cell membranes through multidirectional pulverization, and both allow users to homogenize difficult to lyse sample quickly and thoroughly in a relatively short time.
The MP FastPrep offers some significant advantages, however, beginning with a capacity that is twice as large. Additionally, interchangeable sample holders are available for the MP FastPrep for a variety of sample sizes, including 24 x 2mL, 48 x 2mL, 24 x 4.5mL, 6 x 15mL, 12 x 15mL, and 2 x 50mL. The memory feature allows you to save up to 5 pre-set speed and time parameters. This allows for easily reproducible results when isolating stable RNA, active proteins and full-length genomic DNA, or extracting nucleic acids, proteins, metabolites and other small molecules from almost any sample. Efficiently lyse bone, brain, tumor samples, yeast, fungi, spores, feces, soil, sediment, leaves, roots, seeds, among other difficult to lyse samples.
The design of the MP FastPrep 24 is simple yet attractive, with a narrow footprint and easy to operate lid for loading samples. An emergency stop button on the front of the unit is a nice fail safe measure should the unit be loaded out of balance or experience any other faults during a run.
The only drawback of the MP FastPrep 24 to the Savant FastPrep models is price: the MP FastPrep 24 typically lists at close to triple the price of the older Savant models. But for many users the added functionalities plus other features of the MP FastPrep are worth this significant price difference.
We currently have used and refurbished MP FastPrep 24 homogenizers in stock and available. All of our equipment is used and reconditioned. Our technicians test all equipment to confirm that it operates properly and to the manufacturer’s specifications. Please call or email us today for information on pricing and availability. Thanks!

Okay, we admit it – we’re competitive people. We want to deliver the best deals possible to our customers. And so when we see lower prices on comparable equipment from other vendors we’re going to do our level best to match those prices.
A good ballpark price on a piece of used lab equipment is 50% the cost of a comparable new item, meaning that typically you’re going to find that prices from American Instrument Exchange are 40% to 60% lower than the price of new lab equipment.
But if a manufacturer offers a discount of 10% on a piece of equipment we want to know about it. So call or email us and if we can reduce our list price accordingly we will!
Same goes for used lab equipment from other sources. If you find another vendor selling a biosafety cabinet with new HEPA filters, fully tested and with a warranty for less than us, please call or email and tell us. We want to match that quote!
Be sure and remember though that not all used lab equipment is equal: someone selling a rotary evaporator on Ebay, as is, with no warranty and a pile of miscellaneous glassware is not the same as purchasing a fully tested, warrantied model with the glassware configuration of your choice from an established used equipment dealer with over fifty years of experience.
All of our equipment is used and reconditioned. Our technicians test incubators using a calibrated digital chart recorder to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and clean all incubators thoroughly prior to shipment. So if you’re looking for any used and refurbished lab equipment please call or email us today and tell us about other quotes your receiving so that we can match them. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished Filtered balance enclosures from American Instrument Exchange.
For the past couple of years we’ve been getting our hands on a lot of balance enclosures, mostly from Labconco and Flow Sciences. Why? Because these are handy little units that small labs can use to provide user protection in place of more traditional (and expensive) chemical fume hoods.
Now don’t get us wrong: chemical fume hoods are great products and remain one of our bread and butter categories. And for some applications there’s no adequate substitute for a good old fashioned Mott fume hood. But for a lot of simple weighing applications a balance enclosure can save you a ton of space, time, and money.
For example, take the Labconco XPert Balance Enclosure paired with a Filtermate exhauster. These units can be placed directly onto a benchtop and offers 23” of interior depth that can easily fit most microbalances and analytical balances. Depending on the model and the needs of your application the Filtermate can accept a HEPA filter, carbon-based filter, or combination of the two to remove hazardous powders, particulates or vapors before returning the filtered air to the lab.
Labconco filtered balance enclosure with Filtermate motor
Flow Sciences balance enclosures are similar and designed for potent powder weighing applications. The ETA series feature top mounted motors and dual HEPA filtration systems and provide balance stability for balances with readability to seven decimal places. The HEPA filters are Bag-In/Bag-Out for easy replacement.
So if you need protection for potent powder weighing applications but can’t install a chemical fume hood, you should definitely consider a filtered balance enclosure. Call or email us today for pricing and availability. Thanks!

We read an interesting article on Friday about lab waste and the push to make scientific research and production laboratories more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Every day labs use and throw away plastic pipette tips, racks, foam coolers, solvents, and more. Additionally, equipment like ultralow freezers and fume hoods are almost by definition energy hogs.
A non-profit called My Green Lab is trying to change this by introducing a set of best practices intended to reduce waste, cut down on energy and water use, and switch to using more sustainable materials when possible.
As we’ve stated before, purchasing used equipment is one big way that labs can cut down on carbon footprint. It’s one of the benefits of purchasing used and refurbished equipment from American Instrument Exchange. You’re reusing equipment that has been decontaminated, cleaned, and repaired. You’re reducing the need for extracting resources that contribute to the raw materials as well as the energy inputs used to build the machines. You’re recycling equipment that is fully tested and in good working order for continued productive use in your lab. All of which helps your bottom line, improves your green credentials, and most importantly helps the planet.
So visit our website or give us an email or call for more information on used and refurbished lab equipment. Thanks!

We sell lots and lots of biosafety cabinets. Lots. And so when you ask us for our opinion on a particular brand or model we’re going to be able to provide a good amount of insight mount of into the pros and cons of that BSC.
In short, our opinion on the Nuaire 425-300 is: this is a good, solid option for labs that need a BSC but are limited in space or have dimensional restraints because of facility access or some other external constriction. In other words, if you need a 3’ wide biosafety cabinet you should seriously consider the Nuaire 425-300.
Like other Nuaire 425 series biosafety cabinets the 425-300 is a Class II Type A2 (or A/B3, depending on age) that features two HEPA filters to provide clean recirculated air back into your lab space and protect both personnel and product. Nuaire biosafety cabinets are often a cost-effective alternative to some other higher-priced models and their customer service team is terrific. The NU-425 series are dependable machines with very few bells and whistles – just straightforward controls and operation.
Back to the size: overall the Nuaire 425-300 measures just 42”W x 33”D x 63”H, which means that it can fit down narrow hallways, into standard passenger elevators, and through skinny doorways.
This model can be outfitted with up to four fixtures for gas, vacuum or water. We install new HEPA filters in every biosafety cabinet prior to shipment and put them through the certification process here in our shop in ensure that they operate properly and will pass certification when they reach your lab.
So if you’re in the market for a biosafety cabinet but you’re worried that you can’t fit one into your lab, please give us a call or email today about the Nuaire 425-300. Thanks!
