And one of the benefits of having 30,000 square feet of storage space (plus another 10,000 or so square feet of auxiliary storage) is that we can store a ton of fume hoods, including floor mounted walk-in models. These units can be very difficult to find on the used market. New units typically cost a minimum of $15,000, with most units costing upwards of $25,000.

And lead times? Well, for new units you’d better be prepared to order anywhere from three to twelve months in advance. Whereas walk-in fume hoods coming from American Instrument Exchange can ship in as little as two weeks.

And for customers in New England we may be able to provide set up and assembly services. We quote each job individually and the cost will depend on location and other factors, so please contact us to get an estimate on your job.

So if you’re in the market for a walk in chemical fume hood and are looking to save 40% to 60% of the cost of a new unit, please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

Over the past few years The Atlantic has done some commendable reporting on CRISPR, and a few weeks ago published an interesting article on phages which protect themselves from editing by bacteria deployed CRISPR.

Basically, these phages have proteins that stick to the scissorlike CRISPR enzymes and blunt them. One phage in particular, called phiKZ, can resist every version of CRISPR introduced to attempt to edit it – in other words, it’s anti-CRISPR protein seems to be universally applicable. Further research demonstrated that the phage surrounds encapsulated its DNA inside a shell of protein which it suspends inside itself with thin filaments, thus preventing CRISPR from reaching the DNA and preventing any editing.

Researchers observing through microscopes observed this phenomenon, watching the shell block the CRISPR scissors. When the phages DNA was removed from the shell the CRISPR scissors could edit it and the phages were destroyed.

This is a very brief summary of a brief summary, and we encourage you to either ready the Atlantic article in its entirety or a more technical version in Nature. This is a fascinating discover and could lead to developments in gene-editing control technologies.

Based just north of Boston, we’ve been refurbishing and reselling laminar flow clean benches for over 50 years. We work with products from The Baker Company, Nuaire, Labconco, and Thermo Scientific, among others. Our technicians inspect each clean bench to ensure that all of the controls work properly, that the UV and/or fluorescent lights are operational, and that any plenums or other features are intact and to manufacturer’s specifications. As a final step after we complete our refurbishing and testing we certify the benches here in our shop in order to insure that the unit will pass certification once it reaches your laboratory.

Baker EG6320 laminar flow clean bench

Baker EG6320 laminar flow clean bench

Baker is one of our favorite manufacturer’s, and the EG6320 and EG6252 models are always in demand. This is a console style clean bench, meaning that the motors are located in the integrated base stand. The Baker EG6320 motors draw air through the lower front panel and sidewall section slots. Then the pre-filter traps dust and large particles, after which the air travels through a HEPA filter at an average velocity of 100 fpm before being directed horizontally across the work surface. The Baker Edgegard EG6320 assures product protection and is used in pharmaceutical production, research laboratories, manufacturing facilities, aerospace, bioscience, food processing, hospitals, and other research and production environments. The stainless steel worksurface and sides of the working area are easy to clean and care for.

Thermo Heraguard ECO 1.8 laminar flow clean bench

Thermo Heraguard ECO 1.8 laminar flow clean bench

Thermo Heraguard clean benches are a relatively new addition to our inventory and thus far we’re impressed. The design of these models is clean and streamlined with a DC blower motor that uses less energy to operate when as compared to similar benches. We sell these models with a stand and HEPA filter. This clean bench is ideal for use in laboratories performing microbiological and biotechnology work, pharmacy laboratories, medical and microbiological laboratories, clinic and hospital laboratories, optical industry laboratories and in electronics industry labs.

Nuaire NU603-630 reverse horizontal flow safety cabinet

Nuaire NU603-630 reverse horizontal flow safety cabinet

The Nuaire NU603-630 has different operational principles than most clean benches. The Reverse Horizontal Flow Safety Cabinet is a product resulting from the development of the “laminar flow” principle and the application of environment controls as required in the field of biological research or chemical containment. Because the cabinet allows room air to flow over the work area, the cabinet does not provide a sterile environment for work in process. In other words, provides Personnel Protection allowing room air to flow over the work zone to create a barrier controlling contaminates generated in the work zone from migrating into the laboratory.

AirClean AC6000HLF laminar flow clean bench

AirClean AC6000HLF laminar flow clean bench

AirClean products are very popular and this polypropylene-construction AC6000HLF can be used in IV admixture preparation, drug compounding, plant cell culture, non-biological tissue culture, media preparation, pharmaceutical procedures, and other applications that require Class 100 conditions. The polypropylene is chemical resistant and rust-proof, as well as easy to clean, and because it’s seamless there is no disruption of airflow.

So if you’re in the market for a laminar flow clean bench and are looking to save some money, please give us a call or email today. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. Thanks!

Exciting news! We just received two brand new pieces of equipment from Binder, one of our favorite manufacturers. Both of the units are brand new, unused, and came to us still in the original packaging.

Binder KBF 115 climate chamber

Binder KBF 115 climate chamber

The Binder KBF 115 may have the tightest temperature and humidity stability of any environmental chamber we’ve stocked, with humidity fluctuation at equal or less than 2% of set point and temperature fluctuation of only 0.1°C from set point. So if you’re looking for a reliable stability test chamber with precise maintenance of constant climate conditions, contact us today for more information on the Binder KBF 115.

Binder FD 240 mechanical convection oven

Binder FD 240 mechanical convection oven

Double-door ovens are popular but hard to come by on the used market so this Binder FD 240 is a real find. The chamber is a large 8.4 cubic foot capacity with a high temp range of 300°C. The efficiency of the oven is increased by the patented APT.Line drying and powerful air turbine. Forced convection produces higher drying rates and quicker heating up speeds, which results in considerable time saving. Due to the high rate air transfer, particularly efficient drying is achieved, which is important for drying samples with a high moisture content. Call or email us today for a quote!

Clean benches, cryostats, walk-in fume hoods, environmental chambers, rotary evaporators and more – we’ve had a lot of equipment arrive recently and most of these are high quality, newer vintage units.

We’re already getting lots of inquires about the 8’ wide Kewaunee floor mounted walk-in fume hood. We have four of these units in stock and available and for customers in New England we can offer inside delivery and set up (call or email for info on fume hood set up). These hoods feature two vertical sashes that allow 64” clearance for entry when open. Each side of the hoods have air, vacuum and gas fixtures. These hoods are in almost new condition!

A Thermo Heraguard ECO 1.8 laminar flow clean bench also arrived recently. This is a 6’ wide model and comes with a stand and new HEPA filters and is ideal for use in laboratories performing microbiological and biotechnology work, pharmacy laboratories, medical and microbiological laboratories, clinic and hospital laboratories, optical industry laboratories and in electronics industry labs. We’re pretty impressed with the energy efficient design and quiet operation.

If you’re looking for a cryostat you may want to consider this Vibratome Ultra Pro 5000. It’s designed for brain sectioning and other difficult-to-section tissue. The chamber has -35°C operation with a single heavy-duty compressor, auto-defrost and buffered quartz timer, as well as built-in freezer digital temperature displays. Again, terrific condition!

We also received another Buchi R-210 rotary evaporator system that includes a V-855 vacuum controller, a B-491 heating bath, and V-700 vacuum pump. These systems are always popular and sell frequently. We include the full glassware assembly with a cold-finger condenser.

We’ve always been a big fan of Caron Products and so are excited to have a Caron 6034-1 reach in environmental chamber available. This unit features CO2 control and active humidity control to 95% RH. It has a generous 30 cubic foot chamber and a heated triple-pane outer glass door providing both visibility and increased energy efficiency, an air intake filter to increase compressor lifespan, adjustable sliding shelves, interior outlets and access ports, an RTD temperature sensor, an infrared CO2 sensor, an audible alarm system, and a locking control panel.

We also received several lab benches and workstations, so if you’re setting up a new lab or new workstation these could be good options.

This isn’t a complete least of all the equipment that has arrived at American Instrument in the past few weeks – just a few of the highlights. Check out our new arrivals for pictures and specs of all the equipment that’s come through the door lately. Thanks!

Microbalances are a specialized laboratory weighing device capable of weighing with sensitivity to a millionth of a gram. Microbalances are used in product testing and quality assurance labs, as well as chemistry labs and mining to measure small amounts of powders and minerals. Medical device research might also employ a micro balance to check uniformity in critical components.  Micro balances are also very sensitive to exposure to air currents, dust, and thermal fluctuation. Because of this, micro balances should be placed in a hood or enclosure when in use. Some models offer air buoyancy correction software which compensates for fluctuations in air density.

Microbalances are often hard to come by on the used or secondary market for a number of reasons, so we always try to have some on hand to meet customer demand.

Mettler AX26 microbalance

One of our most reliable sellers is the Mettler MX5. The MX5 features a separate weighing cell and evaluation unit, which virtually eliminates any thermal influences that might disturb or disrupt the accuracy of the measured weights. An automatic door further reducing ambient vibrations, and the Mettler MX5 has a fully automatic adjustment feature. The operating menu is intuitive and user friendly with a built-in calibration function, weighing process adapter, repeatability, auto zero correction, primary and alternative weighing units and interface output parameters. (The MX5 is an update on the older Mettler MT5 balance, which is an oldie but a goodie.)

We are also fans of the Sartorius ME5. Like the Mettler models the ME5 has separate weighing cell and evaluation components. It stabilizes within ten seconds and has 14 built in applications which quickly process data. Calibration is internal and can be performed automatically with ISO/GLP compliant recording. The Sartorius ME5 features the “Eureka” air buoyancy correction function which automatically compensates for changes in air density.

Earlier this week one of our technicians was giving a few of his family members a tour of the shop, showing off his work. At the time he was in the midst of testing and inspecting a flammable material storage freezer. “Why would anyone need to store something flammable in a lab?” one of the kids asked. So in recognition of that question we figured we’d put together a little primer on flammable material fridges and freezers.

Many labs work with solvents and intermediates that are volatile and must be chilled or frozen and thus require storage solutions that reduce the risk of fire. Standard laboratory refrigerators and domestic refrigerators have numerous ignition sources that could ignite accumulated vapors: electrical and heating components in standard refrigerators and freezers are typically exposed and can cause a spark leading to a fire or an explosion.

So what’s the solution for storing temperature sensitive volatile materials?

Specialized cold storage with no interior ignition sources. Flammable material refrigerators and freezers have no interior sparking lights, thermostats, defrost timers, switches, or any other electrical components located in the interior of the unit. All electrical components, such as temperature controller and other wiring, must be located on the exterior of the unit.

Explosion-proof refrigerators and freezers are designed to prevent triggering a fire or an explosion both inside and outside the unit. All of the electrical components and wiring (including temperature controller, evaporator, etc.) are located in sealed conduit housings on the exterior of the unit.  The unit does not come with a power cord and must be hard-wired to the power source, successfully eliminating any electrical exposure.

An example of a flammable material storage freezer is this Fisher Isotemp unit. It’s built to preserve temperature sensitive reagents, samples and specimens. The spark-proof interior separate contents from compressor and motor and it features a top-mounted hydraulic thermostat and door stop and magnetic door gaskets that provide airtight seals that insulate and prevent release of hazardous fumes.

This flammable material storage refrigerator from American Biotech Supply is similar in design but with a temperature range from 0°C to 10°C.

For an explosion proof freezer option is this Fisher model, with a top-mounted hydraulic explosion-proof thermostat and 1/3 horsepower hot wall condenser compressor. To comply with NEC code these units must be hard wired directly into a properly rated conduit box. This unit has a temperature range down to -30°C and about 30 cubic feet of storage capacity.

(And quick disclaimer: we’re happy to provide additional information on any of the equipment we have in stock, but you should always double-check with your facilities manager, landlord, or other safety supervisor for specific storage guidelines for your lab or building.)

So if you’re in the market for either flammable material or explosion proof cold storage and are looking to save some money, please give us a call or email today. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. Thanks!
