Cell Culture Lab Basics

Cell culture includes a diverse and far-ranging collection of operations for maintaining, expanding, and utilizing cells grown outside their natural environment. Typically, “cell culture” refers to cultures derived from multi-cell, eukaryotic organisms such as human, animals, and even insect, the removal of cell from tissue to be grown in a favorable artificial environment. The cells may be removed from the tissue directly, or they may be derived from a cell line that has been pre-established.

Contamination of cultures must be a major concern for all cell culture labs, and therefore labs should be situated in areas with low amount of thru traffic, preferably a designated room with sealed windows that can be kept dust free.

Cell Culture Lab Equipment

The specific requirements of each cell culture lab will vary depending on the type of research being conducted. For example, the specific needs of a mammalian cell culture lab focusing on hermochromatosis will be different from those of a lab focusing on protein expression and using insect cell cultures.

Most labs also incorporate or expand to allow an ultra-low (-86°C) freezer and/or cryogenic storage tanks, as well as larger floor model centrifuges to increase batch process sizes and increase throughput, an autoclave, top-loading and analytical balances, microplate washers, and laboratory glassware washers, amount other equipment and instruments.

American Instrument Exchange offers three different outlines for you cell culture lab set up: a basic package starting at $17,500, a standard package starting at $40,200 and a premium package starting at around $67,850.

Click here for more details about the Beckman Optima MAX-XP available from American Instrument Exchange.

For decades Beckman has consistently manufactured some of the best centrifuges on the market. So when we got our hands on the Beckman Optima MAX-XP we were very excited to give it a try.

The first thing we noticed is that this centrifuge is quiet, with half as much sound as other tabletop ultras and significantly less dBs than floor model options. Even at runs up to 150,000rpm the volume was unexpectedly low. The full-color touchscreen is easy to read and has remote monitoring and control features.

Beckman Optima MAX-XP

Bells and whistles aside, the Optima MAX-XP is ideal for applications requiring high speed and g-forces with volume flexibility, like viral vector gene delivery and nanoparticle applications and also meets the needs of traditional laboratory applications, including separation of subcellular particles and protein purification and isolation. It’s fully compatible with a complete library of fixed-angle, swinging-bucket and unique near-vertical-tube (NVT) tabletop rotors. In short, this is a power-packed solution that delivers fast, efficient separations from samples as small as 175 μL up to 32.4 ml and at speeds of up to 150,000 RPM and more than 1,000,000 x g.

Security features include rotor identification by serial number as well as password protection and electronic signatures help you maintain chain of custody and compliance. The Optima MAX-XP’s rotors and its labware are designed, manufactured and tested as an integrated system for optimal performance and safety. The advanced software supports rigorous electronic recordkeeping with password-controlled access and audit trail documentation. The system monitors and records individual user and run data, rotor logs and more. Also features real-time speeds, time and temperature, and a customizable user interface for up to 12 persons. Plus, access to an array of language, including French, Spanish, Japanese, simplified Chinese and more.

So if you’re in the market for a tabletop ultracentrifuge please give us a call or email about the Beckman MAX-XP. Thanks!
