Refurbished Thermo Revco UxF freezers available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

In an ideal world, we would hardly think about ultra-low freezers: we would load our samples, close the door and go to lunch. And 99% of the time that’s the case, especially with well-designed units like the Thermo Revco UxF series ultra-low freezers. But being the pragmatists that we are we recognize that the real world is not always ideal and problems can happen, and in the case of ultra-low and cryogenic storage we want to prevent those problems from endangering our critical samples. The Thermo Revco UxF series freezers make it easy for users to monitor current status, diagnose cause of any malfunctions, and get back up and running again quickly.

Thermo Revco UxF30086.

Revco ultra-low freezer have been around since World War II. After being acquired by Kendro Laboratory Products, Revco ultimately became part of the Thermo Electron Corporation in 2005. At first customers feared a fall off in quality when Thermo began to redesign the classic Revco ULT series freezers but after a few early hiccups the quality of the products was apparent once more. Thermo continued to manufacture the Revco ULT ultra-low models as well as similar Thermo Forma ultra-low models. The Thermo Revco UxF series represents another iteration of these dependable machines featuring increased energy efficiency, enhanced controllers and user interface, and datalogging capability.

Thermo Revco UxF 40086

First off, the energy efficiency: the UxF controls allow for an energy savings mode. When in this mode the freezers may take more time to initially drop all the way to -86°C but once at temp they are able to maintain steadily with much less power draw that most other ultra-lows. Because of the relatively long time it takes for the unit to regain the temp setting after the exterior door has been opened the energy savings mode is a great option for labs in which the stored samples either won’t be accessed very often. The high-performance mode definitely uses more energy but delivers better recovery time and tighter temp control. Getting into some of the more technical, nerdy details, you’ll find that the UxF freezers have a brazed heat exchanger as well as brazed joints both of which allow for more efficient heat transfer and reduced leak potential. The heated door gasket on the exterior door also helps reduce heat loss, as do the five polystyrene insulated inner doors. Environmentally friendly, CFC and HCFC-free refrigerants are also a plus environmentally.

Second, the touch-screen, door-mounted control panel: Thermo touts this feature as the highlight of the UxF series design. This panel is bright, responsive, and frankly a pleasure to use. The menu icons are clear and descriptive and allow users to control temperature and security settings, monitor the freezers health and diagnose function problems. We are also impressed with the detailed event logs and the memory storage capacity: these machines can store up 15 years of temperature and event data and the embedded USB port allows for the exchange/export of data. Hopefully the longevity of the data storage is a reflection of Thermo’s confidence in the long-term viability of the UxF freezers.

One concern we have with this screen is the potential for damage – general rule of thumb is the more complicated the control system, the more than can go wrong, right? Unfortunately that’s true here, too. The fancy screens can be damaged both by impact (say, opening the door and allowing the screen to hit the corner/side of another piece of equipment) or through something more innocuous like cleaning solution: when cleaning one of these machines we noticed that fluid can drip behind the plastic that holds the display in place and damage the display and control boards. While a bit of good news is that if the screen is damaged it is easily replaced, the bad news is that the replacement screens from Thermo cost about $1,000, depending on the exact model of freezer.

All in all the we have found that the UxF series freezers are a good value. Only time will tell whether they are as durable, reliable, and have the longevity of the classic Revco ULT units.

Used and refurbished biosafety cabinets available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

A customer recently called us looking for a biosafety cabinet and needed to have the unit shipped in a hurry. But four months ago this same customer said that he was going to try to get a used biosafety cabinet at a lower price from an auction.

No hard feelings, we said at the time. Best of luck and please keep us in mind in the future. And we meant it – money is tight for some labs and if you think you can get a good deal on equipment elsewhere you should go for it. That’s business.

So that’s what he did, and he got what he initially thought was a good deal for a used Baker biosafety cabinet, Class II Type A2, for about $2,600 from an auction. The unit came with no warranty and used filters but he figured “Hey, at that price I still have plenty of room to work out any problems.”

But then he had to arrange for removal of the unit from the auction site, as well as freight pick up and transportation, all of which was a headache and wound up costing him over $1,000. The movers didn’t realize they also had to pick up the stand so the customer had to pay another $400 for them to go back and get that. It took three weeks from the date of the auction just to get the BSC with a stand into his lab.

When he received the unit and inspected the biosafety cabinet he found a crack in the glass sash. That was another $800 to replace, plus another three week lead time.

He had to dispose of the old HEPA filters and replace them with new HEPA filters. Parts and labor for this work was over $1,500, plus shipping and travel time cost, and all that was another four-week lead time.

So by the time he finally thinks he’s up and running he’s into this used Baker biosafety cabinet for over $6,000 and it has been ten weeks since he purchased the unit.

But when he called AirTest to certify the machine it still had problem. The motor needed to be replaced and some of the wiring for the UV bulb had burned out. That worked cost him another $1,600.

At the end of the day this “bargain” on a biosafety cabinet ended up costing him almost $8,000, plus a lot of time and a lot of aggravation, and it still didn’t work.

“If I had ordered from you in the first place,” he said, “I’d have spent less money and would have had a working unit three months earlier.” We were able to supply him with a Baker SG403A-HE with new filters and a stand for less than he’d put into the biosafety cabinet he had purchased from auction, and we were able to deliver in less than three weeks.

The moral of the story: if you’re buying a used biosafety cabinet, you need to know what you’re getting into, and only buy a unit that has been fully tested, with new HEPA filters, and comes with a certification.

We reliably have a large supply of used and refurbished biosafety cabinets in stock and available from Baker, Nuaire, Labconco, Thermo Scientific, and more. We supply new HEPA filters with all biosafety cabinets and we put the units through a certification here to make sure they’ll work properly when they arrive in your lab. We also provide a 90-day warranty with all our equipment.

So if you’re looking for a used and refurbished biosafety cabinet please call or email us today for information on pricing and availability. Thanks!

(Side note: none of this is intended to badmouth equipment auctions. They can be great to work with and most of the people conducting the auctions are honest and helpful, and sometimes – sometimes – there are bargains to be found. So depending on your risk tolerance and patience you might end up with a good deal. But for something large, complicated, and delicate, you’re taking a significant and potentially costly risk.)

Used and refurbished Miele Professional G7827 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

It’s a good thing we have a large warehouse just north of Boston because the Miele Professional G7827 takes up a significant amount of room – which is to be expected with a large-capacity, high-throughput, high-performance glassware washer designed by Miele, the company that sets the standard for laboratory glassware washing technology.

When it comes to glassware washers there are two brands that we recommend above all others: Labconco and Miele. Both companies produce dependable undercounter models, but only Miele produces large units for high-volume research lab use.

Miele Professional G7827.

Miele G 7827

The G 7827 is a modular unit that can be configured in a few different ways. The key component is the washer itself, a single-door model ideal for most glassware cleaning applications. It’s supplied with a top cabinet featuring service doors on front and back, with key locks, and air vents. This kit serves as an enclosure for the drying unit and steam condenser options.

We have this unit set up with a drying unit and drying enclosure. While in the past a lot of labs relied upon separate drying ovens for thorough drying of glassware, the Miele G 7827 eliminates the need for this two-step process. With the Miele drying unit option effective drying takes place within the wash chamber quickly and efficiently. HEPA-filtered forced hot air blows throughout the chamber and through direct injectors for thorough drying of glassware interiors.

Other features include four liquid dispensing systems for automatic doing of detergent and neutralizing agent, powerful circulation pumps, fresh water and boiler system, a triple filter system, and environmentally friendly low-water consumption design.

We may also be able to include accessories like mobile carts, transfer carts, injector units, depending on availability.

So if you’re in need of a large-capacity glassware washer for your lab and want to save up to 60% off the cost of a comparable new unit, call or email us today about the refurbished Miele Professional G7827. Thanks!

Used and refurbished Mettler Toledo toploading available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

Mettler Toledo has been the go-to brand name for laboratory balances for many years. Normally we’re not strict “brand name” type people, but there’s a good reason that Mettler is such a popular choice for weighing solutions.

The Mettler Toledo PG series balances were phased out of production in the early 2000s but are still sought after because they are easy to operate and durable. The Mettler PG5002S is no exception. We sell a lot of these units to customers in industrial and research labs. They are particularly well suited to academic labs because they can absorb a lot of wear-and-tear and still perform accurately. For example, the digital keypad is way more durable than some of the gel-based keypads on Mettler’s later AX and XS series units.

The Mettler PG5002S has a readability of 0.1g and capacity of 5100g. The large and easy to read digital keypad allows for one-hand operation. It features Mettler’s Fully Automatic Calibration Technology (FACT), which is a fully automatic motorized calibration with internal weight. Built-in functions include piece counting, percent weighing, formula weighing and dynamic weight determination, among others, so the Mettler PG5002S has a wide range of operations beyond simple weighing.

Recently there’s been an influx of basic toploading balances selling on Amazon and Ebay for rock bottom prices. For the most part these are manufactured in China and are from new, not-well-established or even previously unheard-of manufacturers. And there’s a reason they are so inexpensive: it’s because they’re cheap. Cheap in the sense that they are not well-made, not well-designed, and not well-supported. Now for some labs or some applications the benefits of the low price may offset the risks of marginal dependability, but for anyone who needs a reliable balance sticking with Mettler (or Sartorius) is still the best choice.

Our technicians test balances to insure repeatability, correct cornerload tolerances, linearity, and reduced span at or near full capacity. We also test all displays and controls as well as any other features that are included, such as auto-calibration and draft shield auto-retraction, to make sure the balances are fully operational. Plus, like all our equipment, all balances come with a 90 day warranty. So if you’re looking for durable, easy-to-use and reliable toploading balance, please give us a call or email today about the Mettler PG5002S. Thanks!

Used and refurbished rotary evaporators available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

We have been selling used and refurbished rotary evaporators for over 50 fifty years. And though we have customers all over the world we deliver a healthy portion of the equipment that we sell to customers right here in Greater Boston.

So why is American Instrument Exchange the go-to provider for rotary evaporators in and around Boston? While we’d like to think it’s because we’re so friendly and pleasant and easy to work with there are at least five other reasons customers choose to purchase from us.

Full testing and warranty

Our industry trained technicians thoroughly test and inspect each rotary evaporator and produce a written performance review of every cabinet prior to delivery. Our testing routine includes running and inspecting the motor unit that rotates the evaporation flask, assembling the glassware and running the system with a vacuum pump (sold separately), and testing the vacuum controller to make sure it is accurate and correctly interacts with the system. We also test the water baths to make sure they heat and control/read temperature accurately. If the system comes with a motorized lift we check the function of this component along with any digital vacuum controllers or displays. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and clean all rotary evaporators and glassware thoroughly prior to shipment. We’re happy to provide decontamination documents and copies of test records prior to shipping. American Instrument Exchange also offers a 90-day warranty on all bio hoods and filters, so that you can be assured that the unit will meet the needs of your laboratory and will be ready to use upon delivery.

Full glassware assembly

New glassware plus the cost of installation can run to well over $1,000, depending on the make and model of rotavapor. We provide a full set of glassware with every unit we sell. If you’re purchasing a used rotary evaporator without glassware there’s no way to know for sure that it works properly. Providing glassware is the best way for us to guarantee that each system operates to spec.

Delivery and set up services

We can safely ship rotary evaporators anywhere in the US and for customers in Boston, Cambridge, and New England we can offer inside, white glove delivery. So not only will we bring the unit to your dock, we can also bring it inside your lab, configure and set up the glassware for you and make sure you are ready to go. (Rate vary depending on location.)

So if you’re in Boston or Cambridge and you’re looking for a rotary evaporator, please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

Used and refurbished cell culture incubators available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

At any given time we have dozens of cell culture incubators in stock from a variety of manufacturers. Stacked units, large capacity reach-in units, air-jacketed models and water-jacketed models, active humidity control models, anti-microbial copper lined units, models with decontamination cycles. Our technicians test incubators using calibrated digital chart recorders to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts and test CO2 levels using a calibrated Fyrite gas analyzer. And given that we’re only 20 miles north of the biotech cluster in Boston and Cambridge we can typically have cell culture incubators tested, cleaned, and delivered to many customers within two weeks.

CO2 incubators are mainstays in biology and biotechnology laboratories engaging in cell or tissue culture work. These chambers provide stable environments that mimic a cells natural environment – a pH level of about 7.4, temperature of around 37°C, CO2 concentration of around 5%, and relative humidity of around 95%. Cell culture incubators are used wherever cells must be maintained, expanded, or cultured over periods ranging from a few hours to many weeks. With exciting advances in biological therapeutics and stem cell research there is growing demand for affordable, reliable refurbished CO2 cell culture incubators, and we have the supply to meet at least a small part of that demand for labs looking to save money but still receive quality used lab equipment.

So given all the experience we’ve accumulated over the years we figured we’d share some opinions on our favorite models. These are short summaries. We’ve reviewed several of these models on this blog so feel free to check out those if you’d like more details, or you can always call or email us with questions.

Thermo Forma 3110

Thermo Forma 3110.

The original Forma 3110 incubator was ubiquitous and for years dominated the market. These water-jacketed models have 6.5 cubic feet of storage space and HEPA filter to provide Class 100 quality air to the interior chamber. These machines are so durable and reliable that we still have customers purchasing them on a regular basis. The Thermo Forma Series II 3110 units are essentially the same as the original version, with some incremental improvements. You can also find Thermo Forma 3130s and Thermo Forma 3140s, with O2 capability in addition to CO2.

Thermo recently introduced the Thermo Forma Series 3 4110 CO2 incubator. Only time will tell if this model has the longevity of its predecessors, but this far we are fans of the updates, including the iCAN touch screen.

For larger chamber, reach-in options, the Thermo Forma 3950 is our go-to. These are 29 cubic foot models and can be equipped with either triple-pane glass or stainless steel doors. Two through-wall access ports can be used to run sensors, probes, or power cords for small instruments into the chamber, or sealed. With sealed ports, this model holds surprisingly tight temperature uniformity for such a large chamber.

Panasonic MCO-19AIC

Panasonic MCO-19AIC.

We’ve written a longer, more in-depth review about these newer units from Panasonic which you can read here. In short, the control and information center mounted prominently on the exterior door a significant improvement over the digital displays of older models. But it’s the decontamination cycles available on these models that have us really excited. The automatic decontamination process begins with a vaporized H2O2 application followed by UV exposure. The H2O2 application ensures complete decontamination of all interior components and CO2 sampling loop. The UV exposure adds redundant decontamination and reduces the H2O2 to water vapor and oxygen eliminating any user health hazards from the vapor application. This process provides complete sterilization in less than three hours and eliminates the need for autoclaving, minimizing downtime between product cycles.

Other models we recommend

VWR Symphony air-jacketed units are well-designed and aesthetically pleasing models. Thermo SteriCult are good choices if you’re looking for slightly larger chambers and active humidity control (as opposed to passive, water pan humidity). Shel-Lab, also known as Sheldon manufacturing, also puts out some quality products, including some large reach in units like the model 2440. Binder is also a good option, with the only drawback to these units is a proprietary CO2 port connection that must be ordered directly from Binder in order to operate the incubators.

So that’s it, a summary of our favorite used and refurbished cell culture incubators. This list is not meant to be comprehensive and we don’t want to offend any manufacturers by implying that we intended to neglect them. We’ll be sure to update and revise this list, so if there are any models you think should be included in the future please let us know.

As always, we’re here to answer any questions regarding used and refurbished incubators, or any other used lab equipment. Thanks!

Click here to see used and refurbished Thermo Revco ULT3030A from American Instrument Exchange.

The Thermo Revco ULT3030A is technical classified as an ultralow freezer because it’s low temperature setpoint it -30⁰C, but we routinely recommend this model to any laboratory looking for a large capacity freezer for that needs to hold a steady and uniform temperature for critical storage needs.

Here’s what we’re talking for basic specs: 29.2 cubic foot storage capacity with chamber measuring 30”W x 29”D x 58”H. Overall exterior dimensions are 34”W x 35”D x 77.5”H, so good storage space to footprint ratio. We supply four epoxy-coated wire shelves coated with this freezer and they are height adjustable in 1” increments. This is an automatic defrost unit but because the low temperature setting is -30⁰C you can easily set the temperature such that it won’t rise above -20⁰C even during the defrost cycle. Other accessories include casters for easy of movement and a key lock; call us about availability.

Thermo Revco ULT3030A.

One of the features we like best about the Thermo Revco ULT3030A is somewhat superficial: the scratch resistant powder coated painted exterior. Sure, at its core this is a cosmetic feature and doesn’t impact function or reliability. But the fact is that we like to deliver clean, good looking equipment to our customers, and the durable paint on this model makes it easier for us to do our job in that respect.

Other nice features include heavy-duty, industrial-grade, hermetically sealed compressors to maintain optimum cooling capacity and (relatively) quiet operation. Near uniform chamber temperature is maintained by a positive forced-air circulation system. The key-operated triple position switch on the Thermo Revco ULT3030A controls the main power and alarm, and locks in temperature and alarm setpoints to minimize setpoint error and prevent tampering. The advanced Microprocessor control system manages setpoint and actual conditions to provide the highest level of security for the stored product while the icon-based controls and displays include graphic references for universal operation.

All of our equipment is used and reconditioned. Our technicians use calibrated digital chart recorders to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts of all ultralow freezers, making sure that the units hold temperature to within the manufacturer specified tolerance. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and if needed replace refrigerant. We clean all freezers thoroughly prior to shipment.

So if you’re looking for a reliable, large capacity freezer, call or email us today about the Thermo Revco ULT3030A. Thanks!

Used and refurbished Hirayama HV-110 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

The Hirayama HV-110 is a vertical loading autoclave. While we’re big fans of some front loading models like the Market Forge Sterilmatic and benchtop Tuttnauers, the vertical loading design does offer some advantages that should be considered.

First, vertical loading unit typically have small footprint to chamber capacity ratio, meaning that you get more throughput with less space. Vertical units are also usually designed to be set on the floor, meaning you don’t need to take up bench space to accommodate them in your lab.

Second, vertical autoclaves are usually portable and don’t require permanent plumbing. Instead they have a water reservoir that can be filled at the beginning of each sterilization cycle. This gives you more flexibility and the opportunity to relocate the unit if need be with very little hassle.

Third, the interior baskets generally allow for loading of more samples/bottles/instruments than comparably sized tabletop units.

The Hirayama HV-110 offers all of these advantages. It’s has a large capacity to footprint ratio, doesn’t require plumbing connections, and allows for large loads. The chamber has a temperature range of 105°C to 135°C and a programmable auto-start feature. The electromechanical door locking system is operated by a simple front-mounted level and the dual-sensing interlock mechanisms automatically lock the lid by determining chamber pressure and temperature to ensure user safety. The auto steam-exhaust mechanism allows for sterilization of liquids without any boil over as steam is slowly released at a pre-set percentage rate post sterilization. The programmable memory allows users to enter parameters for sterilization, exhaust, and warming in each mode.

Plus, like all our used and refurbished lab equipment, the Hirayama HV-100 comes with a 90 day warranty. So if you’re looking for durable, easy-to-use and reliable autoclave, please give us a call or email today. Thanks!
