Click HERE for details on the used and refurbished Mettler Toledo XP105DR available from American Instrument Exchange.

Mettler Toledo has been the go-to brand name for laboratory balances for many years. Normally we’re not strict “brand name” type people, but there’s a good reason that Mettler is such a popular choice for weighing solutions.

The Mettler XP105DR has a readability of 0.1mg and capacity of 220g, with fine range readability of 0.01mg up to 31g. It features Mettler’s Fully Automatic Calibration Technology (FACT), which is a fully automatic motorized calibration with internal weight. The draft shield is motorized and features hands free operation while the level control sensor warns users when the balance isn’t properly leveled.

Mettler Toledo XP105DR.

The display is large, brightly lit and easy to read, and the touch-screen display allows for customization of parameters for up to eight users. We’re very impressed with the durability of these screens. Some of the original touch screens with Mettler’s AX series balances had internal gel pads that seemed to wear out quickly in high use or demanding environments (shared university labs, for example) and required expensive replacement, but thus far we haven’t seen this issue with the XP models. We’ll keep you posted with updates should our opinion on this change.

Recently there’s been an influx of basic analytical balances selling on Amazon and Ebay for rock bottom prices. For the most part these are manufactured in China and are from new, not-well-established or even previously unheard-of manufacturers. And there’s a reason they are so inexpensive: it’s because they’re cheap. Cheap in the sense that they are not well-made, not well-designed, and not well-supported, and constructed with subpar materials in a subpar fashion. Now for some labs or some applications the benefits of the low price may offset the risks of marginal dependability, but for anyone who needs a reliable balance sticking with Mettler (or Sartorius) is still the best choice.

Our technicians test balances to insure repeatability, correct cornerload tolerances, linearity, and reduced span at or near full capacity. We also test all displays and controls as well as any other features that are included, such as auto-calibration and draft shield auto-retraction, to make sure the balances are fully operational. Plus, like all our equipment, all balances come with a 90-day warranty. So if you’re looking for an easy-to-use and reliable analytical balance, please give us a call or email today about the Mettler XP105DR. Thanks!

Used and refurbished biological safety cabinets available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

We have been selling used and refurbished biosafety cabinets for over 50 fifty years. And though we serve customers in labs all over the world we deliver most of the biosafety cabinets that we sell to customers right here in Greater Boston.

So why is American Instrument Exchange the go-to provider for biosafety cabinets in and around Boston? While we’d like to think it’s because we’re so friendly and pleasant and easy to work with there are at least five other reasons customers choose to purchase from us.

1.Full Testing and Warranty

Our industry trained technicians thoroughly inspect each BSC and produce a written performance review of every cabinet prior to delivery, including inflow velocity measurements, downflow velocity measurements, and HEPA filter integrity testing, to ensure that the cabinet will meet NSF-49, OSHA, and the manufacturer’s operation specifications. We’re happy to provide decontamination documents and copies of test records prior to shipping. American Instrument Exchange also offers a 90-day warranty on all bio hoods and filters, so that you can be assured that the unit will meet the needs of your laboratory and will be ready to use upon delivery.

2. New HEPA filters

New filters plus the cost of installation can cost well over $1,000, depending on the make and model of BSC. We install new HEPA filters in every biosafety cabinet and clean bench prior to shipment. If you’re purchasing a used biosafety cabinet without filters, there’s no way to know for sure that it works properly. If you’re buying a used biosafety cabinet with old filters, you may not be able to determine the age of the filters or safe operating time remaining, plus there are the concerns of contamination. Installing new filters is the best way for us to guarantee that each biosafety cabinet works to spec and is fully decontaminated.

3. Shorter lead time

All of the biosafety cabinets listed on our website are in stock and available and at any given time we have over 50 different models in stock, with multiple units for many of these models. While the lead time for a new unit directly from Baker, Thermo, Labconco, or other manufacturers can be six months or longer we can deliver a newly refurbished biosafety to your lab in as little as two weeks.

4. Delivery and set up services

We can safely ship biosafety cabinets anywhere in the country and for customers in Boston, Cambridge, and New England offer inside, white glove delivery. So not only will the movers bring the unit to your dock, they can bring it inside your lab, set it in place and on the stand. (Rate vary depending on location.)

5. Free certification

For customers in Greater Boston we provide your first on site certification free of charge. Just a little something extra we do to make sure our customers can get working quickly and inexpensively.

So if you’re in Boston, Cambridge, or New England (or anywhere else for that matter!) and you’re looking for a biosafety cabinet, please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

Used and refurbished cryopreservation available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

Cryopreservation equipment is essential in almost any tissue culture lab in order to preserve structurally intact living cells and tissue. Because of the ubiquity of this equipment we always aim to have an assortment of used and refurbished liquid nitrogen dewars, autofill LN2 tanks, controlled rate freezers, and cryogenic ultralow freezers on hand for our customers.

The simplest type of cryopreservation is a manual fill LN2 dewar, also known as a cryotank. These models are not mechanical but rather consist of a simple double-wall vacuum insulated tank that is then partially filled with LN2 and periodically replenished. Racks are inserted into the tank, often hooked over the side of the rim of the tank. Samples can be loaded into the racks. LN2 levels in these tanks can vary depending on whether samples need to be stored in liquid or vapor phase. A good example of LN2 dewars are the VWR Cryo Pro models and the Thermolyne Locator series. Because these units rely on LN2 to provide cooling, the advantages of simple dewars include low power consumption and energy efficiency with zero greenhouse emissions, as well as reliably long hold times even in the event of power outages. The downside is that you’ll need to have a consistent supply of LN2 and monitor the tanks regularly to make sure they are adequately filled with liquid nitrogen.

Autofill tanks, on the other hand, can be connected to an LN2 source through a transfer hose and, as the name implies, automatically maintain an optimal LN2 level. These tanks are typically vacuum insulated with stainless steel interiors. Like dewars these units can keep samples preserved for a long time even in the event of a power outage, and should you lose power in your lab you can manually fill these models to help preserve samples for an extended period of time. Right now we have Thermo CryoPlus models available as well as some really nice MVE Cryogenics models.

Controlled rate freezers a different from both the dewar and autofill cryotanks in that they are not necessarily designed for long term storage of samples but rather for sample prep. These units deliver LN2 into a closed chamber and allow users to closely monitor the rate of temperature drop in order to preserve cell suspension and prevent cellular dehydration and ice-crystal formation. After the cell suspension is frozen it can be transferred to either a dewar or autofill system for long term storage. The Biogenic Systems 2101 is a good example of a controlled rate freezer.

Cryogenic ultralow freezers are, as the name implies, ultralow freezers with a low temperature range of -150⁰C or lower. These can be used for long term storage but cannot maintain low temperature for long periods of time so in the event of a power outage or other disruption a cryogenic freezer must be connected to some sort of backup system. Cryogenic ultralow freezers are typically designed as chest style freezers to optimize cooling efficiency.

We test all of the cryopreservation equipment that we sell using LN2 in order to measure static evaporation rate and holding time, as well as any level monitoring apparatus or autofill control system installed on the cryotank. Please give us a call or email today for information on pricing, availability, or any other details regarding the used and refurbished cryopreservation equipment available from American Instrument Exchange. Used and refurbished Thermo Cryo Plus 4 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

Many labs prefer autofill cryogenic storage systems for the obvious ease of operation, but here’s another reason to love the Thermo Cryo Plus 4: it’s so large that for a lot of labs it’s the only cryogenic storage solution you’ll need.

What’s that you say? You have tens of thousands of samples in 2mL vials, so there’s no way the Cryo Plus 4 could possibly fit all the tissue culture samples your lab stores on a regular basis? Well, with a capacity of 38,5000 vials we think it can at least come close. This cryo storage system has a massive 552L capacity, a static evaporation rate of only 10L per day and static holding time of 55days, the Cryo Plus 4 can not only fit all your samples but also safely store them without power or LN2 refill for almost two months.

Set up for the Cryo Plus 4 is relatively straightforward. Simply wheel the tank into place next to the liquid nitrogen supply and use the transfer hose to connect the Cryo Plus 4 to the supply, making sure that the supply is low pressure regulated to 22PSIG or less. Once the transfer hose is connected, open the supply tank valve and check the connections for leaks. As with any LN2 system make sure this unit is kept in a well-ventilated are of the laboratory. Then simply turn on the power switch and begin filling the tank chamber and watch the bar graph on the front of the unit display the liquid level. Key features include audible and visual alarm combinations, a liquid level sensor, a top mounted control panel for easy visibility and programming, and a digital temp display sensor under the lid.

We test all our cryopreservation systems prior to shipment using LN2. Our technicians measure static evaporation rate and holding time of the tanks, as well as level monitoring apparatus and autofill control systems. Please give us a call or email today for information on pricing, availability, or any other details regarding used and refurbished Thermo Cryo Plus 4 liquid nitrogen storage systems. Thanks!

We’ve had a lot of equipment ship out recently, but we’ve also had a lot of equipment coming through those big dock doors in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Below are some of the units that have come in recently that we’re most excited about.

To begin with, we recently received several 8’ wide Kewaunee Supreme Air fume hoods. These are really nice hoods with horizontal sliding glass panel sashes. They come with epoxy work surfaces and base cabinets.

We also have a Miele G7827 large capacity lab glassware washer. This is a freestanding, front loading machine with a single chamber for cleaning, disinfection, and drying. We have one of these in stock right now but if you’re interested in multiple units we may be able to track down a second one for you if your lab needs two identical washers.

For biosafety cabinets, we just received a Nuaire NU-629-600 and a Nuaire NU-629-500. Both of these BSCs come mounted on adjustable hydraulic stands. As always we’ll install new HEPA filters here prior to shipment.

Nuaire LabGard NU-629-600 biosafety cabinet

Speaking of biosafety cabinets, several Baker SG403 and Baker SG603A units recently arrived and are available. These include new HEPA filters and fixed stands. If you’re in or around the greater Boston area we can offer inside delivery and set up. Call or email us today for details!

We also want to be sure to mention the Hirayama HV-110. This is a vertical loading autoclave with a 110L capacity and 135⁰C max sterilization temperature. The Hiyama HV-110 is also portable, meaning it doesn’t have to be plumbed with fixed plumbing connections.

Last but not least, there’s the Leica CM1900 cryostat. Features include programmable auto defrost, 0 – 60um section thickness settings, and 0⁰C – 35⁰C cryochamber temperature range.

Please let us know if there’s any lab equipment you’d like to see us offer more frequently, or if there are particular models you’re looking for – we’re happy to keep our eyes and ears open and call you the next time we have one in stock. And please call or email us any time with questions. Thanks!

Refurbished Thermo Scientific 1300 series biosafety cabinets available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE or HERE for more details.

Thermo Scientific has been producing biosafety cabinets for many years, but the 1300 series marks a welcome return to form. These units feature a sleek, clean line design that cuts out bells and whistles while including some practical updates.

Back in the day, we were big fans of the Thermo 1184/1186 and 1284/1286 bio safety cabinets. They were designed like older Baker biosafety cabinets, clunky and tank-like, but functionally solid and easy to use. Then Thermo started selling 1400 series BSC units, with a motorized sash. In our opinion, this was a solution to a problem that never existed – the sashes on BSCs are generally not particularly difficult to raise or lower. On top of the inessential nature of this auto sash it also had the added drawback of relying on an optical disk for operation that easily slipped out of alignment, causing the sash to freeze in place and become inoperable.

So when we first came across the Thermo 1300 series models our expectations were low. What a pleasant surprise when we discovered that these are well designed, energy efficient units with helpful digital display panels. The sash is standard manual operation that can easily be raised and lowered without undue effort and operates on a simple pulley and counterweight system. The sash is also angled for better comfort and visibility.

Another nice feature is the flat work surface. Some biosafety cabinets have an indented surface to prevent spills, which can be helpful, but can also limit the size of equipment installed inside the cabinets. The flat work surface in the 1300 series allows larger instrumentation to operate inside these biosafety cabinets.

The UV lights for these models (which are optional, not standard, so be sure to specify that you need a UV light when ordering) is mounted inside the canopy, at the top of the front section of the chamber. We like this design too, rather than having the UV bulb inside the chamber. While the risk of damaging the bulb in that scenario isn’t particularly large, it’s still nice to have the added protection and avoid the risk altogether. The UV disinfection procedure can be started by pressing the “UV” button on the front panel and closing the sash.

Stands for these units are optional – you can either mount the cabinet on an existing benchtop or table as long as the drain valve is clear. If you do order and stand, it can be disassembled for shipping, which saves a significant amount of money on shipping cost. Assembly is straightforward and requires only a hammer and Allen wrench set.

In short, you’re making a good choice with the Thermo 1300 series bio safety cabinet. Call or email us today for info on pricing and availability for 4’ and 6’ Thermo 1300 Type II Class A2 bio cabs. Thanks!

Refurbished VWR 2005 BOD incubator available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

BOD incubators are low temperature units designed to cool samples at controlled temperature conditions for accelerated tests and exposures. The acronym “BOD” is short for “Biological Oxygen Demand/Biochemical Oxygen Demand,” a test that determine how fast organisms use up oxygen in a body of water, the oxygen needed for the biochemical degradation of organic material, or the oxygen required to oxidize inorganic materials. Many BOD Incubators have a relatively wide range of low temperature settings of anywhere from 0⁰C to 40⁰C and can be used for a variety of refrigerated storage purposes, such as fermentation studies, plant and insect studies, bacterial culturing, and more.

VWR 2005 BOD incubator.

We like the VWR incubator for many reasons. First, this is a small and adaptable unit that’s affordable for small labs looking for a relatively small amount of initial storage space that they can build off as they grow. With a chamber measuring 16”W x 12”D x 21.5”H and providing 4 cubic feet of storage space, this incubator is perfect for startups or other small throughput environments until their storage needs justify the purchase of a larger 20 cubic foot unit. We’ve had customers purchase three or four VWR 2005 incubators over the course of a few years until their needs justified the purchase of a larger 20 cubic foot unit.

Second, because it’s a small chamber the mechanical convection provides even air distribution and temperature uniformity throughout the storage space as well as quick temperature recovery after the door has been opened and closed.

Third, this incubator is a space saver. At just under 34” tall it can easily fit underneath a lab bench alongside your undercounter refrigerator and freezer, saving valuable bench and floor space.

So if you’re looking for a basic, dependable, small chamber BOD incubator, call or email us today about the VWR model 2005. We’re happy to provide information on pricing and availability and answer any other questions you may have. Thanks!

Used and refurbished Yamato DP-43 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

Vacuum drying ovens are used in a wide variety of industries including food processing, medical device manufacturing, pharmacology, essential oils production, textiles, agriculture, and cannabis extraction, among others. We’ve always sold a lot of used and refurbished vacuum ovens to customers in these industries but with the rapid growth of the cannabis industry in and around Massachusetts we’re seeing renewed interest in larger capacity models from

Yamato DP-43

The Yamato DP-43 and its bigger brother the Yamato DP-63 are great options for labs looking for large chamber, programmable vacuum ovens. Yamato has been around for well over 100 years, first introduced its product line to America about 40 years ago, and quickly became recognized as a source for quality products at competitive prices. We have been particularly impressed with this line of vacuum ovens and highly recommend them.

The Yamato DP-43 has a 3.2 cubic foot chamber mounted on a rolling metal cabinet. The cabinet can store a vacuum pump along with other accessories, a nice feature that saves bench space and means you’ll have a neater, more organized lab, and reduces noise level from the pump during operation. Compared to other similarly sized models the DP-43 is more efficient and reaches vacuum set point quicker thanks to an improved exhaust system.

Yamato DP-43

In addition to the metal cabinet, one of our other favorite features of this model is the control panel. This is a programmable vacuum oven, meaning the unit can be programmed to auto start and stop through a timer in the controller which allows users to time the start of a run or end fixed temperature operation. You can program up to 16 ramp and dwell segments with your own ramp level and time inputs.

The Yamato DP-43 also has a ton of safety features, including sensor trouble detection, SSR short circuit detection, heater disconnection detector (sensor), memory error, internal communication error, overheating and measurement temperature error.

In short, if you’re looking for a great vacuum oven with a lot of features that isn’t complicated to use and can save you a significant amount of cash compared to similar models, consider the Yamato DP-43. Our technicians test all ovens to confirm that they operate to manufacturers specifications and all of our equipment comes with a 90-day warranty. Call for pricing and availability today. Thanks!

There are times when it’s great to buy used and times when it’s not so great to buy used. Almost all of us have lived in a house built by someone else, for example, but most of us might shy away from the idea of slipping on a pair of someone else’s used socks. But when it comes to general purpose lab equipment, buying used and refurbished machines is almost always a cost effective, practical option to outfitting your lab.

Saving Money

For the vast majority of customers this is a primary reason to consider used or refurbished lab equipment, and with good reason. Our equipment is typically priced anywhere from 30% to 60% of the list price of new equipment. We also offer discounted package pricing for bulk purchases. This means that for a typical cell culture lab set up including a refurbished bio safety cabinet, stack of CO2 incubators, refrigerated centrifuges, refrigerators and freezers, ultra-low freezer, analytical balance, inverted microscope, and other assorted equipment the total savings off the list price of new equipment can over 70%. That’s tens of thousands of dollars. Whether you’re on a tight budget or swimming in cash that savings should be a consideration. The money you save on equipment can go toward personnel, marketing, or any number of other productive and effective uses.

Thermo Forma 3110 incubators

Thermo Forma 3110 incubators

Even after the initial startup phase, if you’re just looking to purchase a single item the savings can be significant. A general-purpose five-cubic foot incubator, for example, typically costs about $3,100 from VWR, Thermo, or other manufacturers. We can supply comparable models for around $1,400. Add this up over the course of a year or two and pretty soon your equipment budget starts to look a whole lot more reasonable.

Shorter Lead Time

Take bio safety cabinets, for example. As of this writing The Baker Company is quoting some models of bio safety cabinet and clean benches with six to eight-month lead times. Now there is absolutely a good reason for this: Baker makes high quality products that are almost constantly in demand. But waiting for the better part of a year to receive a new BSC isn’t feasible for many labs. The good news is that American Instrument Exchange can ship bio safety cabinets with new HEPA filters installed as quickly as two to three weeks from the date an order is placed. The same goes for our refurbished chemical fume hoods, clean benches, centrifuges, incubators, ovens, freeze dryers, rotary evaporators, and microscopes.

Environmental Impact

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. Right? Well, buying used lab equipment encompasses all three of these. You’re reusing equipment that has been decontaminated, cleaned, and repaired. You’re reducing the need for extracting resources that contribute to the raw materials as well as the energy inputs used to build the machines. You’re recycling equipment that is fully tested and in good working order for continued productive use in your lab. Win, win and win.

Buchi R-215 rotary evaporator system

Buchi R-215 rotary evaporator system

On top of that, in recent years many manufacturers have begun to focus on improving their green credentials. As a result we’re now seeing better insulation, more efficient compressors and CFC/HCFC free refrigerants in laboratory refrigerators, freezers, and ultralow freezers; more efficient motors in bio safety cabinets, and a variety of other environmentally-friendly construction details in all categories of general lab equipment.

Personalized, knowledgeable service

When you call American Instrument Exchange a real person picks up the phone to answer your questions. You can ask for our sales staff by name rather than by dialing an eleven-digit extension number or instead of following a long series of automated prompts.

While there are certainly many lab equipment manufacturers out there that provide excellent customer service, there are also plenty that are too large and too bureaucratic to provide the level of personalized service that we do. That’s not a criticism – it’s just a reality.

Beckman Optima L-100XP ultracentrifuge

Beckman Optima L-100XP ultracentrifuge

With American Instrument Exchange if you’re experiencing a problem with your order – be it a technical or functional issue with a machine, a snag in the delivery plans, a question about billing, or if you just want to call and say ‘hi’ – you’re going to be able to speak with someone who remembers your order and can assist you.

Now, not all of this is to say that purchasing used equipment is a great option. Use equipment without a warranty, for example, can be a complete waste of money and time – especially if you have to pay to dispose of the device when you find out it’s not working. Additionally, if you’re not very familiar with the operation of a particular piece of equipment or a system is dependent on software to function purchasing new or directly from a manufacturer may be a better option. But all other factors being equal buying used lab equipment is a great way to save money and reduce your negative environmental impact while at the same time receiving professional, personalized service.
