When we first saw the Flow Sciences FS11300 we weren’t sure what to make of it. It looks like a balance enclosure, but it has dual HEPA filters similar to a biosafety cabinet. It can be customized with a sliding sash or glove ports and an antechamber. We asked ourselves: is it a modified compact biosafety cabinet? Is it a modified balance enclosure? Or something else?

This unit is part of Flow Sciences 11000 series benchtop enclosures, which are designed for potent powder weighing – in other words, it’s sort of a combination hybrid of a ductless fume hood and balance enclosure that protects users from airborne contaminants when weighing potent compounds. But instead of a separate enclosure and motor/filter housing connected by a hose (like some other models) the FS11300 has a top mounted motor and filters. The level of protection provided by the dual HEPA filtration is also above and beyond what many other balance enclosures provide. What’s more, the bag in/bag out filter system makes changing the filters a snap and requires no tools.

Flow Sciences FS11300.

As with all balance enclosures stability of the work surface during operation so as not to upset the balance itself and negatively impact the weighing function. The top-mounted motor on the FS11000 series is a high-speed impeller, very energy efficient, and prevents and vibration from reaching the weighing surface. If you have particular weighing requirements please let us know and we’ll do our best to replicate your needs using one of the analytical balances we have in stock and available.

The two FS11300 units that we currently have in stock are equipped with a sliding vertical sash, similar to a fume hood or biosafety cabinet, and each takes up just 36”W x 30”D of bench space – perfect for small but growing labs.

So if you’re looking for a high-end, reliable balance enclosure for potent powder weighing, please give us a call or email today. We’re happy to provide more pictures and videos of the units we have in stock as well as answer questions on pricing and availability. Thanks!

There’s a lot to like about start up culture, particularly in a biotech company: the promise of making life better through mind boggling technological advances, the challenge of bringing an idea or theory to reality, the simple excitement of being part of something new. But with all the unknowns facing a new or small and growing biotech firms, stretching dollars to try and lengthen runway is always a prudent move.

One of the best ways to make your money go further is to purchase used and refurbished general purpose lab equipment. Biosafety cabinets, incubators, centrifuges, balances, refrigerators, freezers, rotary evaporators, freeze dryers – all of this equipment can be purchased used and refurbished for a fraction of the cost of comparable new machines.

The biggest expense for almost any company is personnel and you can’t skimp on salaries. Your employees are your most valuable asset, as the saying goes, and in today’s market it’s especially important to compensate your employees accordingly to keep them productive and happy. And the more money you save on equipment, the more money you’ll have available to direct toward hiring and retaining talented individuals.

That’s not to say that purchasing all used equipment is a good idea, however. We almost always recommend customers purchase mass spectrometers, microplate readers, flow cytometers, analyzers, or any equipment dependent on software for operation directly from the manufacturer, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the equipment and need a lot of operational and tech support. A gas chromatography system is not exactly a plug-in and go machine – users may need to be trained and coached extensively if they are not already well-versed in the principles of operation and/or with the model in question. (That being said, there are reputable dealers who work with refurbished software dependent instruments like these. Call or email us for recommendations.)

General lab equipment, on the other hand, is typically more straightforward to install and operate. A water bath needs to be filled with water, plugged in, and you’re ready to go. An air-jacketed CO2 incubator needs to be plugged in, attached to a gas supply, and you’re ready to go. A biosafety cabinet needs to be put on a stand and plugged in, and you’re ready to go. This is where you can save a lot of money without much headache or frustration.

So if you’re on a budget and looking to start a biotech lab please contact American Instrument Exchange so that we can save you some serious money on equipment. Thanks!

We always try to have a reliable stock of used and refurbished environmental chambers available for our customers. Environmental chambers are finicky machines to begin with – humidity generation can be complicated and is prone to malfunction – and hard to come by, especially from reputable sources. Depending on your application you will also need to choose between passive humidity generation (i.e. a water pan and display read out) versus active (i.e. push button control the dictates humidity level to within =/-3%). Below is a list of some of the models we currently have in stock in our warehouse in Haverhill, MA.

Caron 6030 environmental test chamber

Caron 6030 environmental test chamber.

The Caron 6030 offers a whopping 30 cubic feet of storage space with refrigeration and heating capacity that provide a temperature range from 5°C to 60°C and a humidity range from 20% to 98% RH. It can create repeatable environmental conditions for numerous applications including product shelf life, stability and package testing, light exposure and temperature evaluation studies, electronic component burn-in, TAPPI testing, photostability, plant growth, and insect rearing, among others. These units can be plumbed directly to a water use or used with a condensate recirculating system to provide water for humidity production. Click here for pictures and more info.

Hastest Solutions humidity chamber

Hastest Solutions humidity chamber.

Small chamber, huge temperature range: this Hastest Solutions unit has a relatively small chamber space at only 2.8 cubic feet but a truly impressive -40°C to +140°C temperature range. The relatively humidity can be controlled from 30% to 95%. It’s rare to find a unit that can act both as a refrigerator and a heated, high humidity environmental chamber. Click here for pictures and additional specs.

Caron 6545-1 photostability chamber

Caron 6545-1 photostability chamber.

Another quality product from Caron. The 6545-1 is smaller than the 6030 and is designed to conduct near UV and visual light testing in a controlled atmosphere. The interior lights are programmable and can be turned on and off by the front mounted control panel. The chamber size is 10.5 cubic feet and the temperature range is a narrow 5°C to 35°C. Humidity is active control and can be set from 40% to 70%. Click here for pictures and more details.

Thermo 3911 refrigerated environmental incubator

Thermo 3911 refrigerated environmental incubator.

This is one of our newest favorites. It’s ideal for a range of applications including drug stability studies, shelf life testing for packaged products, cell culture, and insect and other biological research applications. The Watlow controllers take some getting used to and are not the most intuitive to use, but overall this is a great system and can be equipped with optional accessories like a dehumidification system. Click here for pictures and more specs.

Thermo Forma 3950 reach-in incubator

Thermo Forma 3950 reach-in incubator

The Thermo 3950 has been a staple for us for many years and is a solid, dependable option. Humidity control is passive, meaning you’ll need to fill an interior water reservoir and depend on the evaporation to for steam generation to moisturize the chamber. The display will show interior chamber humidity but the only way to adjust the RH is to fill or drain the reservoir. The single chamber is 29 cubic feet and the temperature range is ambient +5°C to 60°C. The Thermo 3950 also features CO2 control. Click here for details and pictures.

We have other units in stock and available, including many more passive humidification units with CO2 capability. If you’d like to check out our full supply of incubators please click here. And as always, please feel free to call or email with any questions. Thanks!

There are many, many, many, sources and articles offering advice on how to improve the energy efficiency and overall greenness of laboratories. This advice runs the gamut, from how to reduce the KWh usage of your ultralow freezer by 30% to smart building design and window placement to how to encourage staff to adopt best practices for lower electricity consumption.

And there are some terrific resources available to help labs improve their efficiency. For a deeper dive into this topic you can check out the Green Labs Program at Harvard or My Green Lab, a California non-profit.

But most of these sources miss a salient feature of starting a new lab: the environmental impact of purchasing lab equipment. Purchasing used and refurbished lab equipment saves energy and emissions typically spent in producing the raw materials used in the production of new equipment as well as in the manufacture and assembly processes. It also cuts down on waste generated by the disposal of equipment and instead repurposes older but still quality, functional machines for long lifespans.

So consider purchasing used and refurbished lab equipment from American Instrument Exchange as part of your overall sustainability plan. Used equipment can be put to better use than being regulated to the scrap heap, and many pieces of equipment can be refurbished for further continued use. For more information call or email us today. Used and refurbished Nuaire biosafety cabinets available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

We’ve written a lot about biosafety cabinets already on the blog and will continue to do so since we are one of the largest (if not the largest) supplier of used and refurbished biosafety cabinets. We’ve even written about Nuaire BSCs before and how these products deserve more praise than they are often given. So here we go: praises of the Nuaire NU-629-600 biosafety cabinet.

Nuaire NU629-600

Because it is mounted on a hydraulic stand the Nuaire NU-629-600 is often categorized as an animal transfer cabinet or cage changing station, but it actually is a standard Class II, Type A2 biosafety cabinet and can be used in any environment to provide protection to personnel, product, and the lab environment. The hydraulic stand is a nice feature for any lab to have, particularly since the lift has a narrow profile and that doesn’t add much to the overall width of the cabinet (which is perhaps the only drawback of the hydraulic stands from the Baker company). This stand allows you to adjust the work surface height from about 24” all the way to 40”, thus accommodating the ergonomic needs of a wide range of multiple users in your lab.

Another nice feature is the energy efficient blower motor. It’s a DC style ECM motor with efficiency savings of over 50% compared to older motor designs. This not only means greener, more Earth-friendly energy consumption patterns for your lab, but also a significant increase in filter load capacity – in other words, longer filter life. With the cost of new HEPA filters and installation currently running at around $1,000 this translates to serious cost savings over the life of the BSC.

In addition to the 6’ wide Nuaire NU-629-600, we also stock the 5’ wide NU-629-500 and the 4’ wide NU-629-400.

Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet, including the controls and blower motor, to make sure that they work properly. Unless otherwise specified all biosafety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to ensure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site. Please call or email us today for pricing and availability of Nuaire biosafety cabinets, or any other used and refurbished lab equipment. Thanks!

Refurbished Mettler Toledo AT series balances available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

Even though the Mettler Toledo AT series analytical balances we discontinued back in the early 2000s they are still one of our all time favorite types of analytical balance. The Mettler AT-261 in particular has been a consistent seller for us for years and continues to be a frequently request item.

Now don’t get us wrong: Mettler still make quality products, such as the XS Series analytical balances as well as the ME series precision balances. All of these are good values and serve to remind us of why Mettler is at the forefront of laboratory weighing solutions.

Mettler Toledo AT Series balances.

The biggest advantage the AT models had over the AX and XS models, in our opinion, are the controllers. Mettler AX balances (also discontinued, incidentally, in 2005) had a removable display with a flat surface and embedded operating keys. The problem that we found with this display was that over time the gel that allowed the operating keys to function would wear out. For users who have the budget and desire to replace their balances frequently, but for others – say, academic labs – this could be problematic. Because the controllers were removable they were relatively easy for non-technicians to replace, but they were not inexpensive.

The buttons on the AT series, however, are just much more durable. They stand the test of time in labs and the buttons on the display rarely wore out, even when subjected to a lot of wear and tear.

So if you’re in the market for an inexpensive analytical balance, consider one of the Mettler Toledo AT series analytical balances. Call or email us today for pricing and availability. Thanks!

Click here to see used and refurbished Thermo Forma 3110 from American Instrument Exchange.

Have you ever worked in a cell culture lab? If so, you’re probably familiar with the Forma 3110 and Thermo Forma 3110 incubators. There’s perhaps no other piece of cell culture lab equipment quite as ubiquitous as these incubators. American Instrument Exchange has been selling these units for over three decades and we always have an ample supply on hand for our customers.

Thermo Forma 3110.

For those of you who haven’t worked with these units in the past here are the basic stats. Each chamber offers about 6.5 cubic feet of storage space, with a double-stack providing 13 feet. The temperature range is 5⁰C over ambient to 55⁰C with set point changeable in 0.1⁰C increments. An interior HEPA filters means that the chamber air is Class 100 quality to prevent contamination, and the CO2 range can be set anywhere from 0% to 20%. The Forma 3110 is pretty darned ideal for cell culture, which partially explains their ubiquity.

Another factor is the ease of use. We have customers who report receiving these units, setting the temperature and CO2 inputs, and then running them continuously for years at a time. (That being said, we’d recommend shutting the unit down and cleaning periodically, as per the guidelines laid out in the operator’s manual. Contamination can occur if the interiors aren’t cleaned often enough.)

One problem that customers report on occasion is a door error, which is often caused by the failure of the magnetic door sensor either failing or falling out of place. Our technicians have developed some good techniques for fixing this error and have become adept at this repair.

Thermo Scientific has recently introduced the Thermo 4110 incubator, a follow up to the 3110. We like the 4110 and we’ve previously reviewed it on this blog, and it certainly has some neat features that the 3110 lacks. It remains to be seen whether the 4110 will match it’s predecessor in terms of durability and reliability.

Another benefit of the Thermo Forma 3110 is that it’s a cost-effective option that allows your lab to grow. Order one incubator to start, then another as your culturing storage needs expand, then a second stack after that. No need to write up new SOPs because you’re getting identical units.

So if you’re looking for a Forma 3110 or a Thermo Forma 3110 series II incubator for your cell culture lab, please give us a call or email. Thanks!

Used and refurbished chemical fume hoods available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

We have been selling used and refurbished chemical fume hoods for over 50 fifty years. And though we have customers all over the world we deliver most of the fume hoods that we sell to customers right here in Greater Boston.

chemical fume hoods

So why is American Instrument Exchange the go-to provider for chemical fume hoods in and around Boston? While we’d like to think it’s because we’re so friendly and pleasant and easy to work with there are at least three other reasons customers choose to purchase from us.

  1. Full testing and warranty

Our industry trained technicians thoroughly inspect each chemical fume hood and produce a written performance review of every hood prior to delivery, inspect each fume hood to make sure the baffles are installed correctly and secure, that the sash and counterbalance systems work smoothly, and that any and all necessary fixtures such as water, air and gas valves are installed. We’re happy to provide decontamination documents and copies of test records prior to shipping. American Instrument Exchange also offers a 90-day warranty.

  • Shorter lead time

All of the chemical fume hoods listed on our website are in stock and available and at any given time we have over 50 different models in stock, with multiple units for many of these models. While the lead time for a new unit directly from Mott, Kewaunee, Baker, Thermo, Labconco, or other manufacturers can be six months or longer we can deliver a newly refurbished fume hood to your lab in as little as two weeks.

  • Delivery and set up services

We can safely chemical fume hoods anywhere in the country and for customers in Boston, Cambridge, and New England offer inside, white glove delivery. So not only will the movers bring the unit to your dock, they can bring it inside your lab, set it in place and on the base cabinets. (Rate vary depending on location.)

So if you’re in Boston or Cambridge and you’re looking for a chemical fume hod, please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

New Brunswick Innova 44 available from American Instrument Exchange. Click HERE for more details.

For years and years we sold and repaired large capacity incubator shakers that were designed like chest freezers: floor-mounted with hinged doors that opened up clam-shell style. For the most part these were fine machines – durable and reliable. After all, if used and maintained properly there’s not much that can go wrong with a simple shaking mechanism, so unless the temperature controls failed you’d probably get several years of hassle-free use from these machines.

In short, we figured that the floor-mounted incubator-shaker had reached the apex of shaker design, that any improvements would be superficial, like adding a clock to a kitchen oven or a USB jack to a car stereo system. And then lo and behold, along came the New Brunswick Innova 4400 series.

New Brunswick Innova 44.

These units essentially took the old design and flipped it on its side: this allowed the doors to open like a pizza oven so that the units could stack. With seemingly simple design improvement New Brunswick doubled (or even tripled) the capacity of incubator shakers while maintaining the same overall footprint. For labs in expensive areas like Cambridge and Boston, San Francisco, the North Carolina Research Triangle, and other regions where space is at a premium this innovation was welcomed enthusiastically.

The New Brunswick Innova 44 and 44R are the second generation of this design and while not quite as revolutionary as the 4400 series it does offer additional improvements as well as a solid cast iron triple-eccentric, counterbalanced drive upon which the durability of these units depends.

For the average user the most noticeable improvement is the door: the Innova 4400 and 4430 features the aforementioned glide-up door, but on the Innova 44 and 44R models the horizonal bar handle has been replaced by a more robust vertical handle, while the door springs are perceptibly smoother during opening/closing.

We typically sell these units as either double or triple stacked systems, but even if a restricted budget only allows for the purchase of one unit at a time the units can be stacked after delivery in the lab and connected with a simple bracket, which means that as your needs for culturing grow so too can your capacity, all without the need to completely revamp. This provides you with up to three chambers with independent temperature and speed controls. (Just be sure to check with your landlord or facilities manager to make sure the floor can handle the weight capacity of the full stack!) Additionally, even when the units are stacked repair and service personnel can still access the electronics and heating/cooling system components, meaning that if one chamber has problems the others can continue running while repairs are made.

Another advantage the New Brunswick Innova 44 design has over the older models is the slide-out platform mechanism. The chest-freezer style models necessitated reaching down into the incubation chamber to reach the shaking platform to put in or take out flasks. The slide-out platform, by contrast, allows users to load samples without excessive bending or reaching, thereby avoiding back and shoulder strain.

There are some other nice features here, too – nothing strictly necessary, but certainly beneficial. The water reservoir (which is built in to the unit) includes a drain for easy cleaning in the event of excessive condensation or sample spills; the RS-232 communication port is a bonus; the solid state brushless motor is dependable and low-maintenance.

In short, the New Brunswick Innova 44 and 44R are excellent updates on classic machines. Like the Baker e3 SG604 bio safety cabinet, the Buchi R-215 rotary evaporator, and the Thermo Series 3 4110 incubator, the Innova 44 takes all of the best aspects of a machine that has been around for many years and improves on them, keeping all the best features while updating or discarding the drawbacks. Bottom line is that if you purchase one or more of these incubator shakers you can reasonably expect to get several years of service or more out of the machines.

We always have a lot of biosafety cabinets in stock and available from our warehouse just north of Boston. In fact, as of this writing we have a total of over 120 biosafety cabinets in stock, representing 60 different models and a variety of manufacturers. The list below represents some of our current favorites.

Baker SG604

Baker SterilGARD III e3 SG604

We’ve written about the Baker SG604 before, and that’s because we’re big fans of this model. Improvements in operating efficiency mean that this BSC can operate for up to 70% lower cost than comparable previous models, while the fold up front panel makes changing HEPA filters and other routine maintenance a snap. These features come with a price however – the Baker SG604 is one of the more expensive biosafety cabinets currently on the market.
