Click here to see the laboratory freezers in stock now at American Instrument Exchange.

We always have a lot of equipment in stock in our warehouse just north of Boston, including a variety of laboratory freezers.

We have general purpose freezers with both automatic and manual defrost. We have undercounter freezers and giant double-door 50 cubic foot capacity freezers. We have ultralow freezers, cryogenic storage freezers, freezers designed for biomedical use, chest freezers, and more.

Below is a short list of some of the units we currently have in stock.

General purpose lab freezers

General purpose lab freezers are designed to store samples at consistent temperatures around -20°C. Some of these units have auto defrost features to prevent frost buildup; these defrost cycles can result in temperature swings of 4°C. For tighter temperature control manual defrost units might be an option but the tradeoff is a potential buildup of frost that has to be scraped off periodically. Examples include the VWR Symphony SCMPF models and Thermo Revco UGL series.

-30°C laboratory freezers

Lab freezers with temperature ranges down to -30°C or -35°C are designed for more critical storage applications than standard general purpose models, with high-performance lab and clinical grade refrigeration systems. These units are often used for storage of blood and blood components as well as enzymes, culture media, reagents, specimens and vaccines. Examples include Panasonic MDF series units, the Thermo ULT2330 and 3030, and Follett lab freezers.

Flammable material and explosion proof freezers

Safe cold storage of volatile or otherwise hazardous materials need specialized freezers: spark-free internal cabinetry is required, and in some cases top-mounted hydraulic explosion-proof thermostats and non-sparking compressors. These units are also manual defrost. Check out this Fisher Isotemp explosion proof model as well as these Fisher Isotemp flammable material options. We also have some nice LabRepCo flammable material storage freezers available.

Ultralow freezers

Ultralow freezers can be set to and run at temperatures of about -55°C to -86°C and are designed to preserve biological samples, drugs, enzymes, chemical, viruses, cell preparations, or tissue samples in an extremely cold temperature stable environment. Many labs opt for space-saving upright design ultralow freezers while other labs prefer larger footprint but generally more energy efficient chest freezers. For a long time the Themo Revco ULT2586 was the industry standard, but in recent years we’ve seen Thermo Forma ULT models become more popular as well as Thermo UxF units and Thermo TSX units. Some customers are brand-loyal to Nuaire and Sanyo models too, although we’ve only begun to sell these recently and don’t have a strong opinion of them one way or another.

So if you’re looking for a laboratory freezer please check out the selection at American Instrument. We’re happy to provide advice or guidance to help you select the unit that will work best for your lab. Thanks!

We recently got a call from a new customer looking for a few very specific pieces of equipment. As always we were happy to provide quotes and specifics. But when it came to pricing he started referencing “comparisons” which weren’t comparable: parts units from Ebay, untested equipment from Craigslist, off-brand knock-offs available on Amazon.

When purchasing used equipment, or comparing one quote for used equipment to another, it’s important to keep a few points in mind so that you can be assured of a good experience and that you’re getting quality equipment.

First, make sure the dealer is reputable. If a company has been in business a long time, is well-reviewed, has a well-maintained website, and has an extensive brick-and-mortar facility that welcomes customer visits, they’re probably a safe bet. A phone number that is answered promptly during regular business hours is also a good sign.

Second, make sure the dealer has the equipment he or she is advertising in stock, on hand and available. In recent years some equipment “resellers” have popped up that act more as brokers, selling equipment they do not own from actual dealers and then charging a hefty mark up. Ask about current location of the equipment along with pictures of the equipment.

Third and perhaps most importantly, make sure that they equipment is tested and that the dealer has experience testing lab equipment. If the person has never worked with a centrifuge before, how can they be sure how to test it? If the dealer is testing an incubator is he or she using calibrated temperature probes to verify the accuracy of the display and set point?

Fourth, if the equipment is tested make sure it comes with a warranty. Without some sort of guarantee testing can be a moot point.

So if you’re looking for lab equipment that is tested to manufacturer specification and guaranteed to be in good working order, call or email American Instrument Exchange today. We have been a reliable source for used laboratory and scientific equipment since 1969. All lab equipment listed on our website is in stock and ships from our 30,000 square foot warehouse in Haverhill, MA. Oh baby – we have had a lot of equipment arriving lately. Below is a list of some recent arrivals that are now up on our website and available for sale.

We’ve had good experiences with Thermo Revco UxF series ultralow freezers in the past (check out this post from a few months ago for more details), so we were excited to receive a Thermo TSX600D ultralow in stock recently. This is a 28.8 cubic foot capacity model with energy efficient operation (and we’re always into energy efficient lab practices). We also have another TSX series -20°C model available.

Air Clean Systems hood are always popular. We have several AirClean units in stock, including the AirClean AC795BE-972 which just came in. This is a bulk powder handling enclosure designed to provide effective control and containment of airborne particulate during manipulation and transfer of potent compounds in a turbulent free airflow environment. This unit has been modified with a circular cutout with a dump station. Check out this video on our YouTube channel for some detailed images.

Speaking of hoods, we recently have a really nice 6’ wide Kewaunee Supreme Air chemical fume hood that arrived recently. This comes with an epoxy work surface and base cabinets. We have plenty of other fume hoods available, including 4’, 5’, 6’ and 8’ wide models.

We’re really excited about two Baker SG404 biosafety cabinets. These are the latest and greatest Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinet from The Baker Company and we are big fans, especially of the fold up front panel that allows for frontloading HEPA filters.

We also have some nice smaller items arriving, like this Cole Parmer Masterflex brushless process drive pump, which includes a pump head and has a flow rate of 0.0006L/minute to 19L/minute. We also have a bunch of VWR pipettes, including single and multichannels, that come cleaned and calibrated.

As always we have a ton of cell culture incubators available, including some Panasonic MCO-19AICUV units that just came in from a local university. These units feature a dual process decontamination cycle for extremely effective sterilization as well as an H2O2  application to ensure complete decon of the chamber.

If you’re looking for refrigerated incubator there’s the Binder KB400, which just came in last month. This model has a wide temperature range of -5°C to 100°C and a disinfection routine at 100°C. The recovery time is only four minutes from door close to stability, which is even more impressive when you consider the large 14.1 cubic foot chamber.

Finally, there’s the Thermo Sorvall LYNX 6000. We have two of these units in stock. They are high capacity, with a 6 x 1L max carrying load, but maintain a relatively small footprint. The Auto-Lock rotor exchange feature is great and makes swapping rotors a snap – literally, the rotors snap in and out in about three seconds. We have a couple of different rotors available for this model as well.

This isn’t a complete least of all the equipment that has arrived at American Instrument in the past few weeks – just the highlights. Check out our new arrivals for pictures and specs of all the equipment that’s come through the door lately. Thanks!

As the largest supplier of used and refurbished biosafety cabinets in New England (and maybe in the entire US) we have the opportunity to work with a huge variety of different models. Over the years we’ve developed some favorites and preferences toward certain manufacturers, and Labconco is near the top of our list of favorites.

The Labconco Purifer Logic series biosafety cabinets are a nice improvement on the Delta series models. The design is similar but there are some improvements and updates worth noting. The filter monitoring system, for example: an LCD screen inside of the cabinet chamber displays filter life and shows detailed information about operational performance as well as warning users when hazardous conditions or a malfunction is detected. A status line provides feedback on the system, including whether the system is “OK” or if the “sash is too high” while a continuous bar graph display provides information on the life of the HEPA filter and when it will need to be changed.

Another nice feature is the electronically commutated motor. This provide more precisely controlled airflow with no need for additional sensors or adjustments. The ECM can deliver a consistent volume of air even as the load on the HEPA filter changes, which not only provides a longer filter life but is also more energy efficient.

The one flaw we’ve noticed with these units is the somewhat weak lower floor. Labconco clearly states that these units shouldn’t be lifted from the front with a forklift, but because most freight carriers, truck drivers, or other logistics personnel don’t have time to read the full manual these units do often get picked up in a manner that causes the floor underneath the work surface to bend or bow significantly. This can impact airflow and even cause a biosafety cabinet to not pass certification. We’ve developed a couple of methods for correcting this damage, but it should be noted that proper handling is important when shipping or otherwise moving these units.

So if you’re looking for a Labconco Logic series biosafety cabinet please give us a call or email today. Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet to insure that the controls and blower motor work properly. Unless otherwise specified all bio safety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to insure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site. Thanks!

We recently received two Thermo Sovall LYNX 6000 centrifuges in stock and as far as we can tell we are the first used lab equipment dealer in the US to sell these units fully tested and with a warranty.

The Sorvall LYNX 6000 and 4000 centrifuges are the latest iteration of Sorvall’s continually evolving line of floor model refrigerated centrifuges. Like the RC-5C Plus, the RC BIOS, and other Sorvall models, the LYNX 6000 is capable of high-throughput processing of up to 6L and flexibility to support multiple users and applications in a shared lab setting.

The LYNX 6000 is compatible with a total of 19 rotors, from large capacity swinging bucket models to fixed angle rotors capable of achieving 100,605 x g (which for some labs can reduce/replace the need for an ultracentrifuge).

Thermo Sorvall LYNX 6000

One of the features we’re most impressed with is the Auto-Lock rotor exchange. In older model centrifuges rotors had to be screwed or tied down securely into the spindle prior to use, which could be both difficult and time consuming. With the auto-lock features rotors can be swapped within a matter of seconds with no tools or tightening required because the rotor locks itself to the centrifuge spindle. What’s more, thanks to the auto-ID feature rotor specifications are instantly display on the LED screen which shortens run set-up time and eliminates risk for program input error. This drastically simplifies use and operation of the centrifuge and allows users to concentrate on other tasks.

The touchscreen interface also simplifies operation. The highly visible backlit display of set and actual run conditions, enlarged during the run for clear visibility, is easy on the eyes and allow for direct input of program parameters. It includes an integrated rotor calculator for simplifying protocol modifications and transfers and memory storage for up to 120 user defined programs with alpha-numeric naming for easy access.

So if you’re looking to upgrade your floor model centrifuge and want to save about 50% the cost of a new unit, please give American Instrument Exchange a call or email today about the Thermo Sorvall LYNX 6000. We currently have two of these units in stock and available. Thanks!

We sell a lot of circulators designed for a variety of different purposes that demand a flow of temperature controlled liquid, including plastics processing and testing, cryogenic testing, cooling lab instrumentation, biology, and chemical synthesis, among other applications.

Thermo Neslab RTE 740.

The Thermo Neslab RTE-740 recirculating chiller can be used in any of these settings. It’s a compact unit with a wide temperature range from -40°C to +200°C with an open 7L bath, so it can be used for both external circulation and in-bath applications. The industrial grade force and suction pump has enough power to circulate fluid long distances.

Recently we’ve seen an increase in the number of labs using these recirculators for use with rotary evaporators. Rotary evaporators are a mainstay in chemistry laboratories and can be equipped with a glass water condenser that can be connected to a recirculatory. Many solvents can be easily removed at 5°C, which the Thermo RTE 740 can easily achieve.

So if you’re looking for a used and refurbished chiller please give us a call or email about the Thermo RTE 740. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished cryogenic storage equipment from American Instrument Exchange.

When deciding between different cryogenic storage options most labs face a choice between a liquid nitrogen dewar and an autofill system. Like most choices both of these options have their benefits and their drawback.

Liquid nitrogen dewars are fairly basic pieces of equipment: essentially, they’re a non-pressurized tank with an air-jacket constructed of two or more layers with a vacuum maintained between the layers to prevent leaking and provide insulation for safety and improved thermal retention. Dewars typically have a loose fitting cap or plug that can be repeatedly removed and replaced and when in place prevent air and moisture from entering the chamber while still allow pressure from the evaporating LN2 to vent. They can be used to store cells, tissues, or other biological samples at temperatures down to -196°C.

cryogenic storage equipment.

One of the benefits of a basic dewar is that it’s simple to use and there isn’t much that can go wrong: manually fill up the tank to the desired level, then check the evaporation while keeping in mind the specifications on static evaporation rate and make sure no weird frost spots show up on the outside of the tank, indicating a leak. The downside is that you have to fill the tank manually and unless you have a level monitor you’ll need to find some other way to confirm the level of LN2 in the tank.

Autofill systems eliminate the need to manually fill the tank, relying instead on a hook up to a liquid nitrogen source to draw from whenever the tank level is low. These systems are also equipped with visual and audible alarms in the event of any system failure. On the downside, you need to have a readily available LN2 source. Autofill systems are typically more expensive than dewars and require more work to set up and install, including a putting together a condensate collection system for the condensation that forms on the transfer hose and installing a pressure regulator.

If you’re looking for a cryogenic storage system and you’re not sure which is best for you, give us a call and we’d be happy to help you choose between a dewar and autofill system. We have plenty of cryogenic storage options in stock and available. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished New Brunswick I26 incubator shaker from American Instrument Exchange.

New Brunswick has been making quality incubator shakers for years, dating back to the old Innova 4900 model, with a single chamber and three to four independently controlled shaking platforms. The 4900 was supplanted by the stacking Innova 4430 and 44/44R units which offered not only independent controls for each shaking platform but also separate chambers for multiple temperature parameters to be run simultaneously.

And new there’s the New Brunswick I26, with a tight temperature uniformity of less than 1°C throughout the chamber and shaking control accuracy of +/- 1 rpm. The speed range for a single unit is 25 rpm to 400 rpm. (Stacked unit must be kept at 250 rpm or less in order to avoid unstable conditions that could cause the stack to tip or fall, which, trust us, is not fun to see happen.)

There are two design features we’d like to note regarding the I26 because they contribute to a long-life span and reduction in required and anticipated maintenance: the heaters and the triple eccentric drive.

New Brunswick I26 incubator shaker.

We’ll start with the drive. For years New Brunswick has been designing their shakers with cast iron, triple-eccentric counterbalanced drives. The simplicity of the design belies its brilliance. This vibration free construction not only provides uniform stroke and operation but also is durable almost to the point of being unbreakable. So not only do you get reproducible performance time and time again but you also have a platform that can easily handle heavy loads with not strain or damage to the machine.

Likewise, the heaters are designed with longevity and low-maintenance in mind. These low-watt density heaters are resistance type and have high temperature thermostats. To heat the chamber, the microprocessor controller outputs a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal to control the power level of the 650W heater. This cycle time is fast enough to prevent noticeable changes in air temperature due to the cycling, and slow enough achieve a 1 part in 250 output resolution when the power switching is done by a zero-voltage switching SSR. What does all that mean in plain English? It means that the heater doesn’t have to work too hard to heat the chamber, so its anticipated life span is longer than in comparable chambers.

All in all we’ve been very impressed with the operation and performance of New Brunswick I26 thus far. So if you’re looking for an incubator shaker, please email or call us today for information on the New Brunwick I26. Thanks!
