The Beckman Avanti J-20XP floor model centrifuge is a durable and easy-to-operate unit that can be used in a wide variety of applications. It can spin tubes as small as 1.8mL and volumes up to six 1L bottles, depending on rotor selection. We have several compatible rotors available, with the centrifuge currently set up with a JE-5.0 Elutriator rotor.

Elutriation is the process of separating particles based on size, shape and density. The Beckman JE-5.0 Elutriator rotor combines counterflow elutriation technology (i.e. the process of separation by washing) and centrifugal force to achieve the separation of whole living cells. The separation takes place in the funnel-shaped elutriation chamber. While the rotor is spinning a suspension of cells is pumped at a from outside the centrifuge into the rotor. Small cells with low sedimentation rates are quickly washed toward the axis of rotation and are washed out of the chamber, up through the rotor, and into a collection vessel. Larger and/or denser cells move through the chamber more slowly and reach equilibrium at the elutriation boundary, with the largest or densest cells remaining near the inlet to the chamber. Incremental, continued increases of the flow rate will elutriate all cells from the chamber.

The Beckman JE-5.0 has a maximum rpm of 5,000 and a max k-Factor of 6,785. It’s constructed of aluminum and stainless steel and features a quick-release assembly that can be autoclaved for sterile operations. The Beckman JE-5.0 rotor has a list for $25,000 or more for a new unit.

So if you’re looking for a centrifuge and rotor combination for Elutriation applications please give us a call today. You can check out the Beckman Avanti J-20XP here on our website, and we’re happy to answer any questions you have. Thanks!

When it comes to general purpose lab equipment buying used and refurbished machines is almost always a cost effective, practical option to outfitting a college laboratory. Below are a few of the benefits for universities that come with purchasing used and refurbished lab equipment.

Saving Money

For the vast majority of university laboratories this is a primary reason to consider used or refurbished lab equipment, and with good reason. Our equipment is typically priced anywhere from 30% to 60% of the list price of new equipment. We also offer discounted package pricing for bulk purchases. This means that for a typical cell culture lab set up including a refurbished bio safety cabinet, stack of CO2 incubators, refrigerated centrifuges, refrigerators and freezers, ultra-low freezer, analytical balance, inverted microscope, and other assorted equipment the total savings off the list price of new equipment can over 70%. That’s tens of thousands of dollars that you’ve saved. Whether you’re on a tight budget or swimming in cash that potential savings should be a consideration.

Even after the initial startup phase, if you’re just looking to purchase a single item the savings can be significant. A general-purpose five-cubic foot incubator, for example, typically costs about $3,100 from VWR, Thermo, or other manufacturers. We can supply comparable models for around $1,400. Add this up over the course of a year or two and soon your equipment budget starts to look a whole lot more reasonable.

Shorter Lead Time

Take bio safety cabinets, for example. As of this writing The Baker Company is quoting some models of bio safety cabinet and clean benches with six to eight-month lead times. Now there is absolutely a good reason for this: Baker makes high quality products that are almost constantly in demand. But waiting for the better part of a year to receive a new BSC isn’t feasible for many labs. The good news is that American Instrument Exchange can ship bio safety cabinets like the Baker SG403 or Baker SG404 with new HEPA filters installed as quickly as two to three weeks from the date an order is placed. The same goes for our refurbished chemical fume hoods, clean benches, centrifuges, incubators, ovens, freeze dryers, rotary evaporators, and microscopes.

Environmental Impact

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. Right? Well, buying used lab equipment encompasses all three of these. You’re reusing equipment that has been previously used, decontaminated, cleaned, and repaired. You’re reducing the need for extracting resources for raw material input into production as well as the energy inputs used to build the machines. You’re recycling equipment that is fully tested and in good working order for continued productive use in your lab. Win, win and win.

On top of that, in recent years many manufacturers have begun to focus on improving their green credentials. As a result we’re now seeing better insulation, more efficient compressors and CFC/HCFC free refrigerants in laboratory refrigerators, freezers, and ultralow freezers; more efficient motors in bio safety cabinets, and a variety of other environmentally-friendly construction details in all categories of general lab equipment.

Personalized, knowledgeable service

When you call American Instrument Exchange a real person picks up the phone to answer your questions. You can ask for our sales staff by name rather than by dialing an eleven-digit extension number or instead of following a long series of automated prompts.

While there are certainly many lab equipment manufacturers out there that provide excellent customer service, there are also plenty that are too large and too bureaucratic to provide the level of personalized service that we do. That’s not a criticism – it’s just a reality.

With American Instrument Exchange if you’re experiencing a problem with your order – be it a technical or functional issue with a machine, a snag in the delivery plans, a question about billing, or if you just want to call and say ‘hi’ – you’re going to be able to speak with someone who remembers your order and can assist you.

Now, not all of this is to say that purchasing used equipment is a great option. Use equipment without a warranty, for example, can be a complete waste of money and time – especially if you have to pay to dispose of the device when you find out it’s not working. But all other factors being equal buying used lab equipment is a great way to save money and reduce your negative environmental impact while at the same time receiving professional, personalized service.

So call or email us today with any questions about our current inventory of used and refurbished lab equipment. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished Thermo Heratherm incubator from American Instrument Exchange.

We have several Thermo Heratherm incubators in stock, including the benchtop refrigerated Thermo Heratherm IMP 180.

At about 25”W x 29”D x 36”H this unit is great for both benchtop and undercounter use and provides a generous 6.3 cubic feet of storage space. How can an incubator be that small, with that much storage space, and manage to fit both a compressor and electrical heating elements in its design? The answer is simple: it doesn’t. Instead the Thermo Heratherm uses Peltier technology to both cool and heat the chamber from 5°C to 70°C thermoelectrically. Not only does the Peltier technology result in a smaller size with greater capacity but other benefits include no use of hazardous refrigerants, minimized vibration, and drastically lower energy consumption. For example, at a setpoint of 20°C the Heratherm consumes about 1.92 kWh per day, compared with nearly 12 kWh per day by a comparably sized, compressor cooled incubator.

Thermo Heratherm incubator.

Other features include temperature uniformity as good as ±0.3°C (at +25°C), and stability as tight as ±0.1°C, CFC free/HFC free polyurethane insulation foam for outstanding temperature performance and condensation prevention, a heated door with intelligent energy control to ensure reduced condensation, and intuitive programmability function for defined temperature ramping, soak/cool and dwell. The internal memory has space for storage of up to 10 programs with 10 temperature steps, loop program, and select mode at end of cycle.

So if you’re looking for a compact refrigerated incubator you should really consider the Thermo Heratherm IMP 180. Give us a call for more details, or click here to see pictures and more specifications on our website. Thanks!

We get a lot of calls from customers looking for laminar flow benches. Sometimes they’re looking for a clean bench, other times they’re in need of a biosafety cabinet. Sometimes they’re not sure of the difference in the function of these two types of lab hood. So we thought we’d put together a short primer on the contrasts between these two very different pieces of equipment.

The general idea behind any laminar flow hood is that it provides filtered, laminar air flow for a clean work area. Both the clean bench and biosafety cabinet need HEPA filters to operate effectively and remove airborne particulate materials with a particle size of 0.3 μm or greater with an efficiency of at least 99.97%. In other words, both clean benches and biosafety cabinets are simply protection compartments, but offering different levels of protection. The key difference is that the clean bench is intended to provide protection only for the product within the clean working space, while biosafety cabinet provides protection not only to the product but more importantly to the personnel and lab environment. Again: a clean bench protects only the product, while the biosafety cabinet protects the product AND personnel.

Because of these different protection priorities the two types of laminar flow benches are used in distinct applications.

Clean benches

The laminar flow clean bench brings air through a HEPA filter and then discharges this air across the work surface and toward the user, thus keeping the work surface isolated from dust and other particulate matter.

biosafety cabinets

Laminar flow clean benches can be used for applications in which a dust free environment needs to be maintained, such as media plate preparation, plant tissue culture work, the assembly of electronic devices, medical implant devices or other sterile equipment, or any work with non-hazardous materials where clean particle free air is required. Clean benches should not be used for handling any infectious material, cell culture material, or drug formulations – in other words, never use a clean bench for an application requiring a biosafety cabinet.

Biosafety cabinets

Biosafety cabinets can actually be broken down into a few more sub-categories. For purposes of this blog post we’ll be focusing on the Class II, Type A2 designation (also known as Class II, Type A/B3), which is the most common type of BSC. These units draw air through the front of the unit, then through the back wall and a HEPA filter down into the chamber. Air is then exhausted through another HEPA filter and back into the room.

biosafety cabinets

The first HEPA filter (called the supply filter) traps particulate matter to protect product inside the biosafety cabinet while the second HEPA filter (called the exhaust filter) traps any infectious agents and thus provides personnel and environmental protection.

Biosafety cabinets can be used with work involving microorganism with biosafety levels 1, 2, and 3, mammalian tissue culture and work with mammalian blood and tissue, formulation of drug compounds, work with infectious or potentially infectious material, or any other work that requires biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3.

So that’s it in a nutshell. The key point here is that the laminar flow clean bench protects only the product, while the laminar flow biosafety cabinet protects the product, personnel, and environment. If you have any other questions about the different between these two pieces of equipment and would like help selecting a particular model for your lab please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

We sell biosafety cabinets with such frequency and to such a wide variety of companies that we sometimes forget that not everyone is familiar with our BSC preparation and refurbishment process.

Based just north of Boston, we’ve been refurbishing and reselling biosafety cabinets for over 50 years. We work with products from The Baker Company, Nuaire, Labconco, and Thermo Scientific, among others. All of the biosafety cabinets we sell are decontaminated and we install new HEPA filters in each BSC prior to shipment. Our technicians inspect each biosafety cabinet to ensure that all of the controls work properly, that there are no cracks or chips in the glass sash, that the counterweights and sash raise and lower smoothly, that the UV and fluorescent lights are operational, and that any plenums or other features are intact and to manufacturer’s specifications. As a final step after we complete our refurbishing and testing we certify the cabinets here in our shop in order to insure that the unit will pass certification once it reaches your laboratory.

Thermo Scientific model 1371 biosafety cabinets.

So what does the refurbishing and testing include? First and foremost we install new HEPA filters in every biosafety cabinet prior to shipment. New filters help to prevent any cross contamination between labs and a working lifespan of up to 10 years, depending on the type of BSC and volume of work. Second, installing new HEPA filters can be time consuming and costly. The front cover of the BSC has to be removed and an interior cover may have to be removed as well. After that, depending on the make and model of the unit, the motor may have to be loosened, a HEPEX bag needs to be removed/replaced, and brackets removed or loosened, among other small steps. Then the gaskets on the new filters must be coated with grease to help insure a seal and the processed reversed. The media in these filters is so delicate and that it can’t be touch or at all damaged – even grazing the media with a palm or an elbow can damage them beyond use or repair.

Collectively our technicians have over 75 years’ experience working with biosafety cabinets and are installing new HEPA filters on almost a daily basis. We can repair and install UV kits, mount biosafety cabinets on casters, source stands and other accessories if need be, and help you select the unit that’s going to be the best fit for your lab and your budget.

In addition to replacing the HEPA filters we often change the motors in biosafety cabinets before shipping units out to customers. Like the compressors in an ultralow freezer, motors are the mechanical heart of a biosafety cabinet. A new blower motor in a BSC can extend the lifespan on a unit by 15 or 20 years.

So if you’re looking to purchase a bio safety cabinet, let us remove some of the stress and aggravation from the process for you. Call us today for a quote on a refurbished unit from Baker, Nuaire, Labconco, Thermo, or any other manufacturer. We’ll do our work here to make sure that when the BSC arrives in your lab it will be ready to go!

Click here to see used and refurbished Beckman Avanti J-E available from American Instrument Exchange.

We’ve sold many Beckman Avanti J-E centrifuges in the past but haven’t had one in stock for the last couple of years. We were excited to receive another one of these units recently during a lab cleanout because they are versatile and have a nifty compact design that still manages to accommodate a max capacity of 4 x 1L. This combination of small size and wide application range make the Avanit J-E a favorite in labs where space is at a premium.

The overall dimensions of the Avanti J-E are 25”W x 31.5”D x 36”H, so it could conceivably fit underneath a benchtop like some smaller kneewell centrifuges (for example, the Beckman Allegra 6KR and the Thermo Sorvall Legend XF).

Another great feature is the wide rotor library – this unit is compatible with 14 different rotors ranging in capacity from 32 x 15mL to 4 x 1L. Compatible rotors include:

  •                 Beckman JA-25.50 fixed angle (21,000rpm, 8 x 50mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-20.1 fixed angle (20,000rpm, 32 x 15mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-21 fixed angle (21,000rpm, 18 x 10mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-20 fixed angle (20,000rpm, 8 x 50mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-17 fixed angle (17,000rpm, 14 x 50mL)
  •                 Beckman JLA-16.250 fixed angle (16,000rpm, 6 x 250mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-18 fixed angle (16,000rpm, 10 x 100mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-14 fixed angle (14,000rpm, 6 x 250mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-12 fixed angle (12,000rpm, 12 x 50mL)
  •                 Beckman JLA-10.500 fixed angle (10,000rpm, 6 x 500mL)
  •                 Beckman JA-10 fixed angle (10,000rpm, 6 x 500mL)
  •                 Beckman JLA-9.1000 fixed angle (6,300rpm, 4 x 1000mL)
  •                 Beckman JS-13.1 swinging bucket (13,000rpm, 6 x 50mL)
  •                 Beckman JS-5.3 AllSpin swinging bucket (5,300rpm, 4 x 500mL)

Applications for the Beckman Avanti J-E include sample preparations, pelleting, extractions, purifications, concentrations, phase separations, and spin column and spin filter centrifugations, as well as rapid sedimentation of protein precipitates, large particles, and cell debris; preparation of subcellular organelles such as mitochondria, nuclei, chloroplasts, and crude microsomes; separation of blood cells and cellular components; and gradient separation, for example, Ficoll-Hypaque1 and Percoll.1

So if you’re looking for a compact floor model centrifuge that’s not going to take up much space in your lab but can still spin volumes up to 4L and can be used for a wide variety of applications, please give us a call or email today!
