Thermo Scientific TSX600D ultralow freezer

Thermo Scientific TSX600D ultralow freezer

The Thermo TSX 600D is a high efficiency ultralow temperature freezer with excellent temperature uniformity. The TSX 600D is extremely energy efficient, requiring only 8.7 kWh/day to store up to 600 two-inch cryoboxes. Additionally, the quiet operation provides welcome relief from the louder compressor operation of comparably sized models. The Thermo TSX600D has a temperature range to -86°C and 28.8 cubic foot capacity, along with a touch screen display and control.

Thermo Revco ExF model 8928 ultralow freezer

Thermo Revco ExF model 8928 ultralow freezer.

We’re big fans of this model. A simple digital display combined with an ergonomic, easy-to-use handle, this Thermo ExF series ultralow freezer is a good example of simple control design coupled with state-of the-art energy-efficiency improvements. This freezer has a 23 cubic foot capacity and five interior doors.

VWR model 5603 ultralow freezer

VWR model 5603 ultralow freezer

This is a smaller model for labs with fewer storage needs. At 13 cubic foot capacity the VWR model 5603 is a good space saver while still offering enough storage rooms for many labs. The front mounted circular display is clear, easy to see and use, while the cascade refrigeration system features air-cooled, hermetically-sealed dual compressors work in unison and cycle on demand of the microprocessor temperature controller.

New Brunswick Innova C340-86 ultralow freezer

New Brunswick Innova C340-86 ultralow freezer

While many labs prefer to purchase upright ultralow freezers mainly due to space constraints and the large footprint that potentially accompanies a chest freezer, studies have shown that chest freezers hold temperature more consistently than comparably sized uprights, use less energy and are all around more economical. The New Brunswick Innova C340-86 provides a relatively compact chest model with 12 cubic feet of storage space, efficient energy consumption of about 10.3 kWh daily, and traditionally foamed polyurethane insulation that provides efficient insulation protection.

Thermo Revco Ultima II cryogenic chest freezer

Thermo Revco Ultima II cryogenic chest freezer

Studies have shown that mechanically refrigerated cryogenic freezer systems have better temperature uniformity than LN2 vapor phase systems, with 100% of the storage space in a cryogenic chest freezer like the Thermo Revco ULT7150 staying at or below -150°C, safely below the -130°C glass transition temperature of water, improving cell viability by reducing occurrences of biologically relevant, thermally driven reactions. The Revco ULT7150 offers a number of advantages over LN2 cryogenic storage, including top-to-bottom temperature uniformity dramatically improved when compared to LN2 vapor and lower operating costs than LN2 freezers of similar capacity. The refrigeration system features a patented, single air-cooled compressor, orbital system with an exclusive mixed refrigerant autocascade design.

We recently received a NuAire LabGard NU-543-400 biosafety cabinet in stock for the first time and, upon initial inspection, we’re very pleased with this model.

Like all Class II, Type A2 biosafety cabinets this BSC protects both personnel and product from airborne biological or particulate chemical agents. Air is drawn in through the front aperture, which provides operator protection (Figure 3). The inflow air mixes with the downflow air as it enters the front intake grille and then passes through the plenum where the air splits. Approximately 60% to 70% of the air is recycled and pushed back into the BSC work area through the downflow HEPA filter, and the remaining 30% to 40% is exhausted through the exhaust HEPA filter.

Aside from the updated visual aesthetic the NuAire NU-543-400 also incorporates an ergonomically angled glass sash that allows for better viewing angles of the worksurface and a shorter reach into the work zone, thus bringing work materials closer to the user and relieving stress on the arms, back, and neck, as well as an armrest that eliminates cold conduction on forearms and associated tendon stress. The recessed airfoil allows technicians to use the armrest without fear of inhibiting airflow. Additionally, the recessed work-tray has a spill lip that both makes reaching the work surface more comfortable and allows for easy clean up.

As with any biosafety cabinet, the core of the NuAire NU-543-400 is the single-piece construction creating a monolithic shell without rivets or sealants to prevent any leaks or fissures. A single piece of stainless-steel wrap is bent to create the cabinet’s walls while more sheets are seam welded to make up the bottom and top of the working area. A second sheet is then bent and inserted and welded to create the interior working area walls.

We’re also fans for the electronic control system. This is the latest technology from NuAire and called the FlowGard microprocessor design. It integrates a dual thermistor airflow sensor to monitor airflow and alert users to any airflow irregularities.

Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet and make sure that the controls and blower motor work properly. Unless otherwise specified all biosafety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to ensure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site.

So if you’re in the market for a biosafety cabinet and are looking to save some money, please give us a call or email today about the NuAire NU-543-400. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. Thanks!

Click here to see used and refurbished rotary evaporators from American Instrument Exchange.

We’ve gotten a few calls in the last couple of weeks asking for information on the difference between Buchi R-215 and Buchi R-210 rotary evaporators, so we figured we’d write a blog post highlighting some of the similarities and differences.

First and foremost, both are great products and quality evaporators. Buchi has been the go-to brand name for rotary evaporators for decades, and with good reason: since 1939 the company has offer high-quality, dependable products for use in R&D, quality control, and production in a wide variety of industries. Buchi rolled out the first commercially available “rotavapor” in the late 1950’s and still produces an array of rotary evaporators, from small benchtop units to huge 50L production models.

rotary evaporators

That being said one big functional difference between these two models to keep in mind is that the Buchi R-215 tower has a built in screen that displays vapor temperature and rotation speed. While this isn’t strictly necessary or required for operation it is a handy feature to have, especially for applications requiring stricter parameters.

Besides that there’s really no difference between the two units. Both models can be paired with either the Buchi V-850 or Buchi V-855 vacuum controllers for optimal process control. Both the V-850 and V-855 allow for control and regulation of the vacuum and have large digital displays. We recommend using these along with a V-700 or V-710 vacuum pump as part of an R-210 or R-215 system.

So if you’re in the market for either a Buchi R-210 or a Buchi R-215 rotary evaporator please give us a call or email today. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished powder weighing enclosures from American Instrument Exchange.

Powder weighing enclosures are designed to protect personnel and the lab environment during weighing, measuring, pouring, mixing and other operations involving dust, particulates and powders, while still providing stable weighing environments for toploading and analytical lab balances.

Just like a chemical fume hood pulls air in and away from the users, powder weighing balance enclosures pull airflow inward at the face in order to protect operators from exposure to hazardous powders or potent pharmaceutical compounds while minimizing the effect of airflow on weighing balances.

Unlike a traditional chemical fume hood, however, these tabletop balance enclosures are easy to set up and can save most labs a ton of space, time and money. Many of these models can also accept a HEPA filter, a carbon-based filter, or combination of the two to remove hazardous powders, particulates or vapors before returning the filtered air to the lab, meaning that they can potentially be used for a wide variety of applications.

The Flow Sciences ETA series, for example, features two HEPA filters and a top mounted motor to prevent disturbances to the weighing surface and allow for stability for balance with readability to seven decimal places.

So if you’re looking for a balance enclosure please give us a call or email. All of the equipment we sell is used and reconditioned. Our technicians test each clean bench to insure that the controls and blower motor work properly, as well as ensuring that the HEPA filter is suitable for use in lab conditions. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a clean bench certification in order to insure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site. Thanks!
