An article in the Health section of the New York Times earlier this week does a nice job detailing some of the healthcare applications of CRISPR technology.

For decades antibiotics and antivirals were the most widely deployed treatment option – when you came down with an infection you got a prescription for a broad-spectrum antibiotic, a “blunt therapy” tool that would kill good bacteria along with those that might be causing your illness. But as bacteria and viruses have quickly evolved and developed antibiotic resistant and antiviral resistant properties scientists and researchers have been looking for new ways to stop the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. And the need is urgent: the UN estimates that by 2050 over 10 million people worldwide could die from treatment resistant viruses and bacteria.

They are now turning to CRISPR. The Times summarizes CRISPR as “a specialized region of DNA that creates what amount to genetic scissors — enzymes that allow the cell (or a scientist) to precisely edit other DNA or its sister molecule, RNA…. Crispr was originally discovered in bacteria, where it helps keep track of past injury. When a virus attacks, the bacterium stores small chunks of the viral genome within its own DNA. This helps the bacterium recognize viral infections when they occur again. Then, using Crispr-associated enzymes, it can disarm the virus and prevent the infection from spreading.”

A team of scientists lead by Dr. David Edgell at the University of Western Ontario recently used a CRISPR enzyme called Cas9 to target Salmonella bacteria, destroying it while leaving other, non-harmful gut bacteria intact. In other words, rather than a scorched-earth blunt therapy, CRISPR attacked only the malicious bacteria, like an antibiotic smart-bomb. What’s more, as this type of treatment is developed scientists may learn how to use CRISPR to train gut bacteria and other resident microbes to prevent disease.

CRISPR can also be used to target pathogenic viruses, as demonstrated by scientists at the Broad Institute of M.I.T. and Harvard. They used a different Crispr enzyme, Cas13, to detect and kill three different single-stranded RNA viruses that infect human cells: influenza A virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and vesicular stomatitis virus.

And even more intriguing is the idea that bacteria and viruses won’t become CRISPR resistant: if a virus or bacteria evolves, the CRISPR system can simply be updated to match whatever changes the organism has made.

With most of these CRISPR antivirals and antibiotics still in proof-of-concept phase treatments won’t be landing on store shelves anytime in immediate future. But still – exciting news about a very promising new technology.

Click here to see the used and refurbished Labconco Protector Premier chemical fume hood from American Instrument Exchange.

We recently received three Labconco Protector Premier fume hoods in great condition – these are going to sell quickly. Three units are currently in stock, all with base cabinets and epoxy work surfaces and we’re selling them at less than 60% the new list price.

For those of you not familiar with Labconco Protector Premier chemical fume hood these units differ from hoods manufactured by Mott or Kewaunee or other manufacturers. The biggest difference is the interior design. Unlike the multi-piece baffle configuration these hoods have a one-piece molded fiberglass reinforced polyester liner that not only is resistant to corrosion, chemicals and vapors but is also durable and easy to clean. Because there are no interior seams, the interior has fewer points of deterioration for longer life.

Additionally, the by-pass block design allows these hoods to operate as either a reduced air volume (RAV) or variable air volume (VAV) system, depending on your needs and the duct/motor configuration in your lab. These hoods are suitable for providing personal protection needed for general chemistry applications involving fumes and vapors. They meet the SEFA-1 standard of a low velocity, high performance hood and may be safely operated as low as 60 fpm.

Labconco certainly had aesthetics in mind when designing these hoods. Not only does the Eco-Foil air foil reduce the overall energy consumption of this unit by about 10%, but the aerodynamic curve is also both pleasing and ergonomically comfortable for lab users. The CGFI duplex panels are located at the corners where the air foil and side panels meet and are complimented by cord-keeper slots to keep electrical cords from getting tangled and in the way.

So if you’re in the market for a chemical fume hood, and want to save some money without sacrificing pleasing design or condition, please give us a call or email today. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. Thanks!

Click here to see the Lancer 1300LX from American Instrument Exchange.

When the Lancer 1300LX first came through the bay door into our warehouse we looked at it and said, “What the heck is that?” It doesn’t look like an undercounter glassware washer like a Labconco Flaskscrubber, but it’s not as large as a Miele G7827 either. So what is it?

We did our research and it turns out the Lancer 1300 LX occupies a middle-ground between the small-volume undercounter models and the high throughput, large capacity models that require serious installation requirements and planning. In other words, the Lancer 1300 LX can clean a lot of glassware while still maintaining a relatively small footprint and with a reasonable installation cost.

Lancer 1300LX glassware washer.

And while we were initially confused about the placement height of the door we now appreciate this feature for both the safety and ergonomic benefits. Rather than having to lift heavy, loaded racks from the workbench to washer and vice versa, or having to bend over repeatedly to load a rack close to ground level, users can load racks directly from a cart with no bending or straining required.

The direct injection cleaning and HEPA filtered injector drying is great for narrow-necked glassware and reduces cycle time by drying glassware and labware inside and out, meaning a faster turnaround and increased productivity. Additionally, four washing positions are available and adjustable for the upper levels and provide for greater wash load flexibility. The microprocessor controls come with four pre-set programs for chemistry glassware, bacteriology/virology (high temperature), stubborn stains (agar) and volumetric glassware (lower-temp). For other applications the 1300 LX offers 38 additional programs that can be modified to fit any application.

So if you’re in the market for a high-throughput glassware washer but your lab is already pressed for space you should really consider the Lancer 1300 LX. Give us a call or email today for pricing or with any other questions. Thanks!

For many years we’ve worked with a variety of Labconco products including glove boxes, filtered balance enclosures, fume hoods, glassware washers, and biosafety cabinets, including the newest Axiom Type C1 model. And one product line we’ve always liked is the Labconco FreeZone freeze dryer series.

Let’s get into the basics first. The Labconco FreeZone Plus 6 is a console style system, meaning it’s mounted on casters and intended to sit on the floor and operate as a freestanding system. The collector has a low temp of -84°C and the ice holding capacity is 6L. A vacuum pump with displacement of 98L/min or higher is required for use (and we provide pumps with the units we sell here at American Instrument Exchange). The system we currently have in stock is set up with a 12-port drying chamber. The refrigerant used in the refrigeration system is CFC-free to reduce harm to the environment in production and use.

Labconco FreeZone Plus 6L Console freeze dryer.

Over the years we have found Labconco FreeZone freeze dryers to be an excellent combination of quality materials, consistent operation, and ease-of-use, all of which make these models a real value. The control panel is clear, easy-to-read and operate. The vacuum graph display and collector temperature graph display are especially useful, indicating the relative vacuum level and temperature so that you can tell at a glance how the unit is operating and whether it has reached the proper vacuum and temp.

So if you’re in the market for a freeze dryer and would like to save some money, please give us a call or email today to learn more about the Labconco FreeZone 6. Thanks!

We sell a lot of biosafety cabinets from a variety of manufacturers, including The Baker Company, Thermo Scientific, Labconco, and others. And we’ve been selling Nuaire biosafety cabinets for almost 40 years and have always been fans of the combination of quality, reliability and affordability of their products.

The Nuaire NU425-400 fits this mold perfectly. This 4’ wide biosafety cabinet is a Class II Type A/B3 or A2 model (functionally both are the same, with 30% exhausted air and 70% recirculating; see our article here on biosafety cabinets) features cabinet construction of all-welded, 16-gauge type 304 stainless steel for a pressure tight design and monolithic, sealed structure.

And you know what we like best about both the Nuaire NU425-400 and NU425-600? Effectiveness inherent in the simplicity. The controls are simplistic in the best possible way, with straightforward toggle switches for motor operation, fluorescent and UV lights. The analog minihelic gauge allows users to monitor the pressure drop over the supply HEPA filter. Nothing fancy, nothing unnecessary – no gratuitous LED displays, no gel-insert control panels to wear out, no superfluous bells or whistles.

Nuaire NU425-400 biosafety cabinet.

There is a learning curve when changing the filters on these models so we suggest hiring an experienced technician to handle this work. Many of these units feature a HEPEX bag as part of the Zero Air Leak airflow system, which can present challenges to users unfamiliar with this design.

So if you’re looking for a biosafety cabinet, be sure to give us a call or email about the Nuaire NU425-400.  Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet to make sure that the controls and blower motor work properly. Unless otherwise specified all biosafety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to ensure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site.

Click here to see the used and refurbished Buchi R-300 from American Instrument Exchange.

We’re very excited about a rotary evaporator system that recently arrived here at AIE: the Buchi R-300 rotavapor. This is the latest and greatest design from Buchi, makers of the most popular, durable, and well-known rotary evaporators on the planet.

While we are still big fans of the Buchi R-210 and Buchi R-215 systems the R-300 features several improvements that are worth noting. First, the ergonomic handle. Unlike the vertical-style height adjust handle on the R-215 the handle on the R-300 is positioned horizontally, parallel to the ground. When the handle is pulled back the electronic lift is engaged and easily lifts the flask from the water bath. The lifting action is smoother and requires much less effort with this newer handle.

Buchi R-300 rotary evaporator system

Second, the I-300 Pro interface. This is the central control for all functions and process of the R-300 system, including rotation speed, temperature and pressure settings. And not only can this interface be installed in several different positions including on the rotavap handle, on the vacuum pump, on a fume hood wall or lab bench wall, but it can also be set up to communicate with your smart phone for remote monitoring, including push notifications and live view.

Third, the V-300 vacuum pump. This is a chemically resistant PTFE diaphragm pump with an ultimate vacuum of 5 mbar and sleek, modern design. The transparent front panel allows you to easily see condensed solvents or particles on the pump membranes. With the V-300 a set vacuum is achieved very precisely by means of speed-control operation, and due to the absence of sudden pressure changes bumping during evaporation is minimized.

You can check out the Buchi R-300 on our website where we’ve posted additional pictures, or on our YouTube channel (see below). Our technicians test all rotary evaporators prior to shipment. All of our equipment is used and reconditioned. While we can’t test for a specific analytical application, we will do our best to simulate the conditions under which the equipment will be run. If you have particular testing requirements or requests please let us know and we’ll work with you to make sure these requirements are addressed during testing.

So please contact us if you’re looking for a Buchi R-300 rotary evaporator system please call or email us today. Thanks!

We always try to keep a large supply of CO2 incubators on hand for our customers. Most of these are benchtop or stackable models like the Thermo Forma 3110 and the newer Panasonic dual decontamination models. And some customers need or prefer models with larger chambers for culturing large volumes of samples, performing growth studies, or other applications that require storage capacities of more than 20 cubic feet.

Caron Product model 6026.

The Caron Product model 6026 incubator offers not only a large 25 cubic foot capacity interior with CO2 control but also features active humidity control and a condensate recirculating system. In terms of temperature and CO2 control specifications the Caron 6026 is pretty standard, with a temperature range from 5°C to 60°C and CO2 control from 0% to 20%. The active humidity control is what sets this unit apart: unlike other large capacity CO2 units which feature passive humidity control with pan reservoirs or interior fill reservoirs, the Caron 6026 has push-button active humidity control adjustable from ambient to 95% RH and fed by an external condensate recirculating system.

The Caron 6026 can also be used as an incubator shaker: with an interior outlet, three shakers can run simultaneously with the refrigeration system maintaining temps down to 15°C and up to 60°C. With prices of new incubator shakers with humidity control at $25,000 to $35,000 or higher, a used and refurbished Caron 6026 represents a great option at a fraction of the cost of a new system.

So if you’re looking for a CO2 incubator with humidity control please call or email us about the Caron 2026 today. Thanks!
