Labconco XPert Weigh Boxes are a type of glove box designed specifically for cleanroom weighing applications with materials sensitive to airborne particulates and requiring ISO Class 3 conditions and/or applications involving weighing potent fine powders.

Like all glove boxes the Labconco XPert Weigh Boxes are sealed enclosures that allow users to handle materials through long gloves secured to port holes in the enclosure. The main chamber provided interior space where manipulation of the contents occurs with the gloves while a front-mounted window allows for observation. The transfer chamber attached to the main chamber facilitates the insertion of small equipment and materials with very little compromise to the chamber atmosphere. These Weigh Box units also have a built-in blower and inlet and outlet HEPA filters to remove particulates that can negatively affect either the user or the materials. A balance vibration isolator is built-in to stabilize a balance on the work surface and an anti-static ionizer fan to control static charge.

Other features include the one-piece, molded polyethylene liner is durable and resistant to chemical corrosion as well as easy to clean. The dry-powder, epoxy-coated steel superstructure is also corrosion resistant. The built-in blower motor has speed control from 13cfm to 100cfm and pulls room air through the inlet HEPA filter and discharges HEPA-filtered air back into the lab.

In short, the Labconco XPert Weigh Boxes are a well-designed specialist solution for weighing applications. If you’re looking for a glove box to use with an analytical balance and are hoping to save some money, please give us a call or email today. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. Thanks!

We’ve been fans of MP Biomedicals products for a while. We’ve worked with the MP FastPrep 24 several times and everyone here agrees that it’s a solidly built and reliable homogenizer, and our experiences with sales and tech support when ordering parts through MP Biomedicals has been uniformly positive.

So when the opportunity came along to get our hands on the FastPrep 96 we immediately said, “Yup.” Similar to the 24, the 96 is a high-speed homogenizer designed to biological samples and lyses thoroughly and quickly any tissues and cells, thus allowing for easy and reproducible isolation of stable RNA, active proteins and full-length genomic DNA. But with a sample volume capacity of up to 250mL (or about 500g) the potential throughput of the 96 is significantly higher than previous models we’ve seen from MP Biomedicals.

MP Biomedicals FastPrep 96.

The FastPrep 96 is also significantly larger than the 24, with a footprint of about 17.5” by 26”. Adapters are available to accepts tubes ranging in size from 0.5mL up to 250mL. The processing speed is 1800 oscillations/minute with a 1.5” stroke and true linear motion eliminates the need to re-orient the plates mid-cycle. Potential research areas include soil and environmental science; genomics; proteomics; metagenomics; metabolomics; food sciences; forensics; plant pathology; communicable disease; cancer; agricultural.

So if you’re in the market for molecular biology sample prep system and are looking to save some money, please give us a call or email today. Our prices are typically 40% – 60% lower than comparable new units and all of our equipment come fully tested to manufacturer spec and with a warranty. We’re happy to provide information on the MP Biomedicals FastPrep 96 that we have in stock now. Thanks!

For the second time in as many week the New York Times featured an article examining some of the amazing possibilities of CRISPR.

Tmunity Therapeutics and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy teamed up to treat three patients with advanced cancers that had progressed despite surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments. The test was intended to assess and determined the safety of the treatment, with the ultimate goal of editing genes so that a patient’s own immune system to attack cancer.

CRISPR was deployed in a relatively controlled manner during the experiment, without the gene editing technology being let loose inside the patient’s bodies. Doctors instead removed T-cells from the patients’ blood and then used CRISPR to improve their ability to fight cancer, arming the T-cells to attack a protein found on cancer cells. The CRISPR was then removed from the cells before infusing the editing T-cells back into the bloodstream.

Subsequent monitoring showed a 10,000 to 100,000 fold increase in the number of T-cells growing in the patients. The cells didn’t die off and no ill effects were observed.

While the researchers stressed that this study is preliminary and does not conclusively show the edited T-cells fighting cancer.

Click here to see the used and refurbished biosafety cabinets from American Instrument Exchange.

We include stands with almost all of the biosafety cabinets that we sell, along with new HEPA filters and a 90-day warranty. Some of our customers prefer hydraulic lift base stands with their BSCs, and we generally have multiple options in stock to accommodate this preference.

In case you’re not familiar with this accessory a hydraulic lift base stand allows users to adjust the height of the biosafety cabinet with a simple push button. This gives everyone in the lab the ability to adjust the position of the equipment and thus accommodates people of different heights and ergonomic preferences, such as a standing work position, as well as providing BSC access to wheelchair bound users. The hydraulic stands can also be used to lower the cabinets enough to easily transport the unit through doorways for facilities that require BSC mobility.

Here at American Instrument Exchange we consistently have Baker SG403 and Baker SG603 biosafety cabinets with hydraulic stands in stock (click here to email us on current availability). We’ve sung praises of the Baker SG403 and SG603 in the past and are happy to do so again here. These BSCs are durable and easy to operate with decent energy efficiency ratings and expected filter lifespan. The one drawback to the Baker hydraulic stand is that they’re bulky, adding about 14” overall to the width of the BSC. So just make sure to account for the additional space needed if you’re interested in purchasing these models.

We also like the Nuaire NU629-600. These hydraulic lift stands have a slightly slimmer profile than the Baker SG603 models but are just as easy to use, with a height range from about 26” to 40”. The DC style ECM motor is energy efficient which translates to an increase in total filter load capacity of 250% to extend the HEPA filter life expectancy from 7 – 10 years.

So if you’re looking for a biosafety cabinet with an adjustable stand please give us a call or email today. Our technicians test each bio safety cabinet to confirm that the controls and blower motor work properly. Unless otherwise specified all biosafety cabinets come with new HEPA filters installed by our technicians at our facility prior to shipment. Our testing procedure includes all the elements of a bio safety cabinet certification in order to ensure that the unit will pass certification once it is at your site.

Fume hoods, incubators, ultralow freezers, centrifuges, rotary evaporators and more – we’ve had a lot of equipment arrive recently and most of these are high quality, newer vintage units.

If you’re looking an ultralow freezer, check out the VWR 40086A. This unit is somewhat similar to the Thermo Revco Exf40086A ultralow freezer and features a prominent circular display and control panel. Within six hours of plugging in this freezer it had reached -86°C and held steady for the remainder of the week as we tested, never varying in temperature by more than +/-2°C even with an empty load. The cascade refrigeration system features an automatic voltage compensator and energy efficient operation.

We’re already getting lots of inquires about the Labconco FreeZone Plus 6L freeze dryer. We have this system tested and cleaned already so it can be ready to ship almost immediately. This system includes a drum manifold, ports, and a vacuum pump, and features a cascade refrigeration system that is designed to handle light to moderate loads of low eutectic point samples.

If you’re looking for a nitrogen generator you should consider the MIDIGAS 6 with the N2 receiver tank. It’s comprised of high tensile aluminum columns that each contain twin chambers for Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS) material which removes oxygen and trace gasses from compressed air by molecular adsorption.

From a lab cleanout in Connecticut we have three Labconco Protector Premier chemical fume hoods, complete with epoxy work surfaces and base cabinets. These units are 6’ wide each and in great condition.

And speaking of fume hoods, check out the 6’ wide and 8’ wide floor mounted walk in Kewaunee fume hoods that are in stock now. These are in almost unused condition!

Last but certainly not least, we have a Buchi R-300 rotary evaporator system in stock. As far as we can tell American Instrument Exchange is the first used lab equipment dealer in the United States to have one of these models for sale! This system includes the R-300 tower, I-300 Pro interface/vacuum controller, B-300 heating bath, and V-300 vacuum pump. The Buchi R-300 features an ergonomic handle with conveniently change the position of the lift, direction rotation speed control for immediate adjustment of rotation speed, and Combi-Clip flask connection.

This isn’t a complete least of all the equipment that has arrived at American Instrument in the past few weeks – just the highlights. Check out our new arrivals for pictures and specs of all the equipment that’s come through the door lately. Thanks!

Click here to see the used and refurbished Thermo TSX600D available at American Instrument Exchange.

Like the Thermo Revco UxF and Thermo ExF series freezers, the Thermo TSX600D is a relative newcomer. And like both of those models there’s a lot to like upon first inspection: the 28.8 cubic foot capacity is generous and packed into a relatively small footprint, and the energy efficiency operation stats are impressive. These units also seem to run quietly – a nice benefit that your eardrums will certainly appreciate.

Also like the UxF models the Thermo TSX600D has a touch-screen interface that allows users to access the freezer event log, temperature log, and conduct status checks on the any back up systems. Though the screen can fail it is replaceable.

Now our first experience with a TSX freezer was a little bit of a letdown. We got the freezer into our shop and plugged it in and initially everything seemed great – the temperature reading dropped, the compressors sounded normal. But within 36 hours the temperature began to rise. After a lot of trouble-shooting, including recharging the compressors with refrigerant and making sure the heat exchanger was working properly, we determined that the evaporator coil was leaking, which is neither repairable or replaceable because it’s embedded in the chamber insulation.

Needless to say this was a disappointment.

Shortly thereafter another TSX600D arrived in the shop. After some cosmetic work (replacing the handle, cleaning the filter, etc.) we plugged this second freezer in and everything worked smoothly. This was a relief to all of us. Within about 18 hours the chamber was down to -80°C and held steady for over a week of operation.

We’ll keep you posted on what we find with future TSX models. Our suspicion is that the evaporator coil leak was a one-off problem.

If you’re looking for a Thermo ultralow freezer and want to save some money, give us a call or email today. Our ultralow freezers typically cost 40% to 60% less than comparable new models. Our technicians test all freezers using a calibrated digital chart recorder to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts. Thanks for reading!
