Like the Thermo Revco UxF and Thermo ExF series freezers, the Thermo TSX600D is a relative newcomer. And like both of those models there’s a lot to like upon first inspection: the 28.8 cubic foot capacity is generous and packed into a relatively small footprint, and the energy efficiency operation stats are impressive. These units also seem to run quietly – a nice benefit that your eardrums will certainly appreciate.

Also like the UxF models the Thermo TSX600D has a touch-screen interface that allows users to access the freezer event log, temperature log, and conduct status checks on the any back up systems. Though the screen can fail it is replaceable.

Now our first experience with a TSX freezer was a little bit of a letdown. We got the freezer into our shop and plugged it in and initially everything seemed great – the temperature reading dropped, the compressors sounded normal. But within 36 hours the temperature began to rise. After a lot of trouble-shooting, including recharging the compressors with refrigerant and making sure the heat exchanger was working properly, we determined that the evaporator coil was leaking, which is neither repairable or replaceable because it’s embedded in the chamber insulation.

Needless to say this was a disappointment.

Shortly thereafter another TSX600D arrived in the shop. After some cosmetic work (replacing the handle, cleaning the filter, etc.) we plugged this second freezer in and everything worked smoothly. This was a relief to all of us. Within about 18 hours the chamber was down to -80°C and held steady for over a week of operation.

We’ll keep you posted on what we find with future TSX models. Our suspicion is that the evaporator coil leak was a one-off problem.

If you’re looking for a Thermo ultralow freezer and want to save some money, give us a call or email today. Our ultralow freezers typically cost 40% to 60% less than comparable new models. Our technicians test all freezers using a calibrated digital chart recorder to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts. Thanks for reading!
