We recently received some unused, almost new condition Thermo Scientific model 1510 Class II Type B2 biosafety cabinets. We currently have five of these in stock and available. These energy efficient cabinets require direct connection to external exhaust and provide personal and product protection from biological hazards and contamination as well as protection from volatile toxic chemicals used in the cabinet. This biosafety cabinet has SmartFlow compensation to maintain downflow allowing effective use of downflow prefilter for extended HEPA filter life. It also has a counterbalanced sash for easy operation, and an 8” sash height, Type 304 stainless-steel interior, LCD information display located within the chamber, and touchpad controls within reach while seated.

Nuaire LabGard NU540-400.

Speaking of biosafety cabinets, take a look at the Nuaire LabGard NU540-400. This is a Class II Type A2 model with a DC ECM motor to economize energy while distributing laminar airflow through a flexible plenum and offering enough power to overcome HEPA filter loading and minimize filter changes. This design provides the user with a work zone whose side and back walls are constructed from a single piece of stainless steel for enhanced containment and easy cleanability. Fluorescent lighting illuminates the procedure inside the cabinet while a dished work tray traps liquid spills and a cord-pass through in the side wall facilitates the use of small electrical devices in the work area.

We’re also excited about this VWR model 1690 oven with a 34.4 cubic foot capacity – it’s huge!  It features true horizontal airflow design, programmable 24-step ramp and soak controller, Type-304 stainless-steel interior and exterior with a durable, powder-coated finish, three-inch intake and exhaust ports, and it’s equipped with adjustable stainless-steel shelves. Horizontal airflow is created using a turbo blower that re-circulates air over the heating element, providing fast heat-up and recovery times, and ensuring a more rapid and efficient rate of drying. By forcing continuously warmed air into the chamber, the turbo blower assures uniform heating across all shelves and to every area of the chamber, eliminating concerns of obstructed air, regardless of how the shelves are loaded.

Another recent arrival is a Beckman Airfuge – a small table-top air-drive ultracentrifuge. We know what you’re thinking – 110,000rpm with a small tabletop centrifuge, that must be a typo, right? Wrong. It’s no typo. This little machine can reach speeds normally associated with floor model ultracentrifuges and can accelerate from a still position to 100k rpms in as little as 30 seconds. The Beckman Airfuge doesn’t use vacuum or high-speed bearings; instead, the rotor is supported and spun by streams of air. This handy little machine is designed to provide a rapid method for removing chylomicrons (i.e., fat particles in lipemic samples) and can be used in a lot of other applications: pelleting particles from a large sample, sedimenting particulates from very small volumes on to supports for insertion into an electron microscope, and many more. If you’re looking for a cost- effective solution to your small-scale ultracentrifugation needs, the Beckman Airfuge definitely deserves your consideration.

Click here to see used and refurbished Thermo Heracell VIOS 160i incubators from American Instrument Exchange.

When customers call us looking for air-jacketed CO2 incubators with a sterilization cycle we typically recommend either the Thermo Stericycle 370 or a Panasonic MCO model with dual decon option. Recently we’ve had the opportunity to work with the newer Thermo HeraCell VIOS 160i models and thus far we are impressed.

Like the Stericycles and Panasonics, the VIOS 160i incubators feature a high-temperature sterilization cycle. The Steri-Run cycle reaches 180°C on all chamber surfaces and is independently proven to achieve total sterilization and a 12 log Sterility Assurance Level (SAL). With the push of a button, the simple overnight routine provides fast, easy elimination of microbial contaminants and eliminates the need for separate autoclaving of parts. This feature also allows labs to avoid the physical constraints and variation associated with UV germicidal lamps and the ongoing costs, handling and storage of potentially toxic germicides.

Thermo Heracell VIOS 160i.

The internal HEPA filtration works with a  THRIVE Active Airflow system in which an in-chamber fan distributes clean, humidified air throughout the chamber ensuring homogeneous conditions.

The VIOS CO2 incubators also have a protected humidity reservoir where directly heated water provides stable high relative humidity levels, preventing culture desiccation; a condensation-free inner chamber that prevents a breeding ground for contaminant; and 5X faster humidity recovery than traditional water pan designs.

And although we are sometimes wary of touch screens, the iCAN screen on the VIOS 160i has thus far shown good durability and resolution and is easy to use.

So if you’re looking for a direct heat, air jacketed CO2 incubator please contact us about the Thermo Heracell VIOS 160i. Our technicians test CO2 incubators using a calibrated digital chart recorder to verify the accuracy of temperature controls and readouts, as well as using a Fyrite indicator to measure CO2 levels in the chamber. We replace any hardware or parts as is necessary and clean all incubators thoroughly prior to shipment.

Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you!

Click here to see used and refurbished biosafety cabinets from American Instrument Exchange.

At any given time we have dozens of biosafety cabinets in stock from a variety of manufacturers. For example, as of this writing we have over 80 individual BSCs out in the warehouse, with more than a dozen that just arrived from lab cleanouts and four that are sitting in the shipping area, fully refurbished with new HEPA filters and awaiting shipment to customers.

Class II, Type A2 bio safety cabinets are the most common designation and require two HEPA filters. During operation air-flow is drawn into the work chamber via the front aperture and continues under the worktop and up the back plenum, where 70 % is recirculated through the main supply HEPA filter to provide down flow and 30 % exits out through the exhaust HEPA filter and out of the chamber. The vertical laminar flow biological safety cabinet provides operator protection by means of inflow, product protection by means of down flow and environmental protection by means of the filtered exhaust. This is the most common type of bio safety cabinet that you’ll typically find in a tissue culture lab.

Why do we install new HEPA filters prior to shipment? In short: because it’s better for our customers. Purchasing a bio safety cabinet without HEPA filters is like buying a car without tires: you can do it, but you’d better know what you’re doing and have plan in place before you hand over a check and get the keys.

To change the filters in these hoods the front cover has to be removed and many manufacturer’s include an interior cover that has to be removed as well. After that, depending on the make and model of the unit the motor may have to be loosened, a HEPEX bag needs to be removed/replaced, and brackets removed or loosened, among other small steps. Then the gaskets on the new filters must be coated with grease to help insure a seal and the processed reversed. And here’s the kicker: the media in these filters CANNOT BE TOUCHED AT ALL OR ELSE THEY WILL BE DAMAGED AND UNUSABLE. Tightening the brackets with a wrench and graze the filters with an elbow? Forget it – you’re not going to pass certification, so you’d better order a new filter, which typically costs around $1,000.

But here at American Instrument Exchange we work with bio safety cabinets extensively. On average we’re installing three or four sets of filters a week and collectively our team here has over 75 years’ experience working with BSCs and installing filters as of the time of this writing. We know that we can install filters quickly and correctly.

Baker SG403 and Baker SG603 SterilGARD III biosafety cabinets

Baker SG603 SterilGARD III biosafety cabinets

The Baker company has been introducing consistently excellent products to market for over three decades. The original SterilGARD models were built like tanks, with a great mix of durability and precision. The SG403 and SG603 SterilGARD III models featured some nice improvements, like a tilted sash for better viewing of the interior work surface and ergonomics, as well as a more energy efficient motor. HEPA filters for these units are available with aluminum frames, which makes them lighter and easier to change with a reduced risk of damage.

We’re big fans of the Baker SG604 and SG404 biosafety cabinets as well. These have only been on the market for a few years though, so we’re withholding opinion until we have a chance to determine the longevity. All indications are that Baker put out another stellar product, but only time will tell. Stay tuned….

Labconco Logic Series biosafety cabinets

Labconco Purifier Logic ClassII/A2 biosafety cab.

The Labconco Purifier Delta series biosafety cabinets were very decent and certainly cost-effective, but did have some quirks that knocked them out of contention as a top tier product, in our humble opinion. The Labconco Logic Series units, however, are great. Good design, with a useful but unobtrusive LCD screen that shows safety status, remaining filter life and other information, an angled sash, and touchpad controls located to the sides of the sash. The one design flaw on these models is the lack of support along the bottom panel which can cause some bending during installation and transportation if not properly handled. This is hardly a deal breaker, however. And it is important to remember that the Labconco customer support team is one of best in the business. We’ve had consistently good experiences them, whether calling about a BSC, freeze dryer, or any other product. Way to go, Labconco. We love you guys.

Thermo Scientific biosafety cabinets

Up until recently we weren’t huge fans of Thermos biosafety cabinets, particularly the models with the motorized sash. In our opinion, this was a solution to a problem that never existed – the sashes on BSCs are generally not particularly difficult to raise or lower and don’t really need to be motorized. In addition to being unnecessary, these sashes also didn’t work all that great.

But with the new 1300 series Thermo has cut out many bells and whistles and put forward a sleek, simple product that seems both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Thermo does have a habit of obsoleting products almost as quickly as they’re introduced to market though, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that they keep producing/supporting these models, because we really like them.

Nuaire biosafety cabinets

Nuaire LabGard NU425-600 biosafety cabinet.

Nuaire often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. We were first introduced to Nuaire as a less-expensive alternative to Baker products, but Nuaire should be recognized as a solid, dependable manufacturer, without qualification. Like Labconco the customer service representatives at Nuaire are consistently knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. The Nuaire LabGard units mounted on hydraulic stands are excellent products, as are the newer CellGard series. And for a combination of quality and low price it’s hard to beat some of the older Nuaire NU 425-400 units.

The Nuaire 540 series models also continue to impress. Nuaire NU-540 bio cabs are much more energy efficient than previous models. The DC ECM motor is economical and relatively quiet during operation. The Aeromax control system continually monitors motor performance (among other metrics) and displays the pressure in the cabinet’s internal airflow plenum. The ‘nitecare’ mode which allows the blower to operate at a lower rate when the sash is closed, saving energy and extending the HEPA filter life. The base stands have also been redesigned and are much more solid than some of the older iterations.

So if you’re looking to purchase a bio safety cabinet, let us remove some of the stress and aggravation from the process for you. Call us today for a quote on a refurbished unit from Baker, Nuaire, Labconco, Thermo, or any other manufacturer. We’ll install the HEPA filters here and put the unit through certification to make sure that it works properly and to manufacturer’s specifications. When it arrives in your lab it will be ready to go, hassle-free!

Click here to see the used and refurbished Thermo Revco UxF30086 from American Instrument Exchange.

We’ve talked about Thermo UxF series ultralow freezers in the past and in the time since that post was published we’ve had more time and plenty of opportunity to work with these models. We’ve come to the conclusion that the Thermo UxF series are a good value that offer reliability and relatively energy efficient ultralow storage.

American Instrument Exchange now has in stock a Thermo Revco UxF30086 ultralow freezer. It’s the first time we’ve seen this model and we really like it. Like the older Revco ULT 1186 model the UxF30086 packs a decent storage capacity into a small footprint, ideal for labs with limited floor space but still offering more interior space than, say, a small portable ultralow unit.

Thermo Revco UxF30086.

Features include an innovative touch-screen control panel which allows users to control the settings and authority levels, monitor the freezer’s health 24/7 and access detailed event log, and an on-board computer can store up to 15 years’ worth of temperature and event data; environmentally friendly CFC/HCFC-free refrigerants and a high efficiency compressor for excellent performance; brazed plate heat exchanger allows more efficient heat transfer and induction brazed joints reduce leak potential and improve reliability; a heated door gasket with four touch points of security and seven zones of protection, maximizing cabinet temperature and eliminating frost build-up.

So if you’re in the market for an ultralow freezer but have limited lab space, please give us a call or email about the Thermo Revco UxF30086. Thanks very much!

We’re very excited to have some Nuaire LabGard ES NU-540-400 biosafety cabinets in stock here at American Instrument Exchange. While we’ve always been a fan of Nuaire BSCs the updates present in the NU-540 series represent some significant improvements when compared to the classic and still popular NU-425 models.

First and foremost, the Nuaire NU-540 bio cabs are much more energy efficient than previous models.

Second, the NU-540 has improved ergonomic design that incorporates at 10⁰ slope into the front window for easier viewing that encourages users to adopt better posture while seat at the biosafety cabinet opening.

Third, the base stand design has been improved – it is both stronger and lighter than some previous iterations, with sturdier sidewalls and a more dependable crossbeam.

Like all Class II Type A2 biosafety cabinets the Nuaire NU-540-400 is designed to protect both personnel and product while working with low to moderate risk biologicals and is 70% recirculating, 30% exhaust.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective, reliable biosafety cabinet, please call or email us today about the Nuaire NU540-400. Thanks!
